For those racing IM St George 2022, I put together a virtual recon which is something I usually do for new courses that I’ve not yet ridden.
It helps me to get the lay of the land before I’m actually out there to race. Then when I’m there in person, I can just go to the sections that I still have questions about. It was useful for me to see where the aid stations will be, the major climbs, and to get a pacing strategy planned out.
Thanks Rob, this is very well done. I sent it to a couple of my athletes who won’t get down there until race day. Thanks for taking the time to put this out here for everyone, very nice visual!!

you’re very welcome - I hope your group has a great race

Quality! I wonder if you can, with your ‘special powers’ discover if Google Earth will be renewing the imagery any time soon. https://ridewithgps.com/.../38499172?beta=false
updated to reflect the forced riding on the left for the first 50km (except where getting onto (9) @ 40km).
Worth highlighting that (23:44 on video, old imagery, Google Streetview is your friend - on RwGPS trace) there will be signed options of whether to come off to Snow Canyon Parkway or carry on into town at 150km / 176km.

Thanks Ajax for the updated file. I’m trying to get the streetview team to lend me their car for a week so that I can drive the course and update all relevant imagery but I doubt they will trust me with their toys…
Thank you so much for putting this together! I haven’t viewed the video yet as I will as soon as my coach aka husband is able to watch it with me. I am coming from the East Coast so I am a little intimated by the climbs. What cassette are you planning on riding and what and how long are the steepest grades? Thanks again so much!

For simplicity I’d suggest just going with the largest cassette you have. I’m using a 11-28. The majority of the climbs are long and not that steep but there are a few short sections at around 10%

Well I would need the largest cassette with the smallest chainring (read 34) and go on the Macca approved cabbage and water diet and just eat tape worms for protein to hollow me out from the inside had I taken my invite for this race.

Dev, you’ve raced St Croix. St George is basically a pancake in comparison to riding up THE BEAST!
For those who use Best Bike Split, what are you getting for a predicted bike time? Estimates for me are usually almost spot on if I bike the same watts that are in BBS, but the predicted time I’m getting seems pretty optimistic: 4:41. That isn’t factoring in winds being strong on race day, which has a chance of happening.

Same for me - I think the reason may be that for most of the long climbs, the speed is such that they will be done mostly in aero. It predicts me going under 12mph very few times. But I do also feel it is being overly generous for sure - we shall see!

I just rode the course this weekend, the gunlock area is really quite fast, with a few steep but short sections. The veyo wall wasn’t bad either, and I’m not good at climbing. The worst part was coming out of veyo, the head wind was insane for about 3-4 miles with a false flat after the volcano climb. Hopefully the wind won’t be like that on race day. Overall, I’m a lot more optimistic about the course than before.
I am curious about your thoughts on that long decent at about 85 miles or so. I heard speeds can get well over 40mph.
yes, it’s fast. There is a very fast section before the snow canyon turn off (not part of the 70.3 course). It also depends on wind through that section, there can be a brutal head wind at times or a nice tail wind (which I’ve only had during the StG marathon and not the 70.3. But you can get well over 40 mph, I hit 51 on the training ride.
How’s the road surface on that long section (Gunlock area)? It doesn’t matter all that much because I’m using the same tires regardless, but it looked pretty mediocre from Street View and I’m curious.
