Svenningson is a late DNS 'cos stomach bug/food poisoning
a full swim and a great start from Riddle
Yes more than a full swim looking at the 2nd lap times, but Jamie had some sort of issue in T1 and lost over a minute on the 3 he came out with…
Chevalier had a really good swim ahead of Weiss and Chevrot and along Ditlev who has impressed last year with his swim improvement. But according to the coverage he -Chevalier - got a penalty for littering in T1
Other takeway from the 1st timing
Only Joshua Lewis and Riddle are able to stick with Ditlev
Burton making up time quickly on the bike riding with (austrian convict) Weiss
Looks like Matt Hanson’s season goal to race the Pro Series is already hurting.
After 30 km on the bike he is already 18 minutes behind the leader and 16 minutes behind Ditlev. This is not a course for weaker riders and the gaps are huge. Burton for example put 4’43 on Chevrot in the first 30 km!
Marten Van Riel finally ditched that “black triangle” suit - best news of this season!
He is however, pretty much all the time, very close to Ditlev it seems…
That suit was one of my faves. The red white Bahrain suit is almost as boring as the race coverage
What is the official reason bibs are still required to be worn on the bike? With numbers on helmet and bike??
Bibs = rule down to country requirement
Katrine Graesboell Christensen in the shout for the win only 4:40 down at T2. She has run 2:50 at Hamburg and 2:52 at Roth (both last year).
Reischmann ran 2:50 at Roth last year though.
Sanchez averaged 3:04 last year (two wins plus IMWC #6).
Ditlev ran out the first 5 miles at 2:27 marathon pace (assumes timing mat distance is correct) and at 11 miles he’d run that next 6 at 2:35 marathon pace.
MvR has gained 61 seconds in 11 miles (!): still 5:28 down. Remember (if he has a modicum of sense) he has to recover for Singapore T100 on Sunday.
Schomburg looking assured of #3 on debut IM and sub 8 hours (which is impressive given how ‘slow’ IMSA is).
Can they not have a pouch sewed into the kit to hold the number or sew the number directly to the back of their kit?
In the post finish interview Magnus mentioned he was bonking pretty hard the last few km and perhaps went out a bit to aggressively. MVR also looked pretty well used up by the end of the run as well.
Yes but they would need to spend time putting the bib in after the swim and then it needs to be at the front during the run
Just a general reply to the thread. Is there a link to a livestream on youtube or do I need to get a paid account somewhere. I have not bothered mainly because I need the time on Sunday’s to go and train outdoors.
I have the free Outside TV account. That’s where i watched it. You can rewind if you start watching before it ends.
He seemed to drink water where 2nd and 3rd place drank a coke at the finish. I’ve never been able to drink sugar at the end. Seeing that, i wonder if they could’ve taken on more carbs during the run?
Why not put it in before the race? The swim skin or wetsuit would protect it. Then have your second one on a race belt like normal for the run.
IM Rules
p34 footnote:
“2. Please note: at select Event venues athletes are required to wear their athlete bib number on both the bike and run segments of the Race (See Event-specific Athlete Information Guide for more information).”
and in Run Conduct:
“6.01 (g) Athletes must wear their IRONMAN issued bib number in front of the athlete’s person and the bib must be clearly visible at all times on the run course.”
I appreciate the ‘in front’ element is widely ignored by both athletes and refs. Though I think that wearing it in front, fully visible (and legible not folded) crossing the finish line is as reasonable a rule as zipping up.
I have read somewhere that you’re not allowed to wear the bib number under a wetsuit (I never have anyway) but fail to find any such reference in the rules.
That’s usually up to the national federation. Some years ago some Australians won a triathlon in Spain and got DQd because they swam with the bib under the wetsuit, which wasn’t allowed at the time there. Now it’s allowed provided you use a wetsuit but the organizer can ban it too. I guess it has something to do with the type of bib they use, if it’s paper-style, it could get damaged or softened making it easier to lose it afterwards
Well Ditlev went out at 2:32 pace (<1:16 at 21.1km interpolated). So hardly surprising (a mild bonk). I can only assume Ditlev has never really bonked, 'cos that’s not it: he ran the last 10km at sub 3 hour speed, and MvR matched that within a few seconds.
But going out that hard did have the effect, desired/intentional or not, of reducing MvR’s motivation to make a serious effort to catch and he settled in to a doable pace thereafter. Let’s face it, MvR had 6 minutes to catch up and might reasonably expect Ditlev to run sub 2:40 so a win would’ve needed a <2:34: hard graft. With the knowledge of a Singapore humid heatfest in 7 days always lurking.
Rough positive splits were:
Ditlev: 1:16 and 1:25
MvR: 1:15 and 1:24
Schomburg: 1:18 and 1:24
Hoffmann : 1:15 and 1:24
Reischmann: 1:26 and 1:33
