So this was probably the first weekend that the general public really got to use Ironman Perform. Given that you possibly havent used Powerbar Endurance before, the unmixed version of Perform, what did you think?
Myself personally thought it was pretty good for an oncourse drink. The no HFCS did make a difference on the stomach compared to the Gatorade Endurance usually given on the course. Not to say the Gator ever made me sick, but I didnt feel the need for as much water to flush it down. I used it for a 1 hour swim, 5 hour bike, 25 minute run Saturday and a 2:45 run yesterday. It could use more electrolytes if you arent using salt pills but I prefer to control my salt intake because I think I know my balance pretty good and I can control it better with pills. My first choice is First Endurance EFS for training and racing but in an IM I just use the oncourse stuff (don’t like to carry more than 1 bottle at a time) and supplement with EFS Liquishot and Salt Stick pills.
I cracked the first of my sample case open this weekend after I got roasted in a road race. Initial reaction, the orange mango tasted pretty good even warm sitting in my car. Pretty smooth and not too sweet, no after taste. bet it mixes well with gray goose.
Used it on the first leg of my ride this weekend. Gas stations obviously aren’t stocking it yet, so the second half calories were various products. I’d rate it as adequate. For liquid calories, it provided exactly what it needed to provide, and nothing more. It’s not super palatable, but on any given day my nutritional preferences tend to sway with the wind. Like I said, it provided steady energy with little else in tow - shedding both positives (flavor) and negatives (gut ache).
EDIT: FWIW I got stuck with the lemon lime version. For me, neither lemon nor lime have a favorable place in endurance nutrition … but, as I said, that’s me. Would like to try the other varieties for more than n=1 data.
mango? huh. i got a case of Lemon-lime. i HATE mango. i pray they don’t have mango at IMLP.
i’ve gotten two good workouts with it; a two hour run and a two hour ride followed by a one hour run. both days were 80+ degrees with high humidity. the drink seemed fine for both. it may have been a little heavy in the stomach for the run … or maybe it was just too d*mn hot out. anyway, it seemed fine. it tasted ok. and i didn’t crave water immediately after drinking it. so that’s good enough for me.
I’ve used both the Orange and the Lemon/Lime…Orange definitely tastes better. The Perform had a significant increase in my blood sugar levels compared to Gatorade. I don’t have the label in front of me, but I believe the Perform is 40% higher in calories and 20% higher in carbs. than Gatorade. Just need to do a little fine tuning to get it dialed in…
I’ve tried Perform for a full week now, and every time I’ve used it, I have had to burp constantly, and I’ve felt quite nauseous. Apparently it doesn’t agree with my stomach. I’ll stick with Nuun, water and carbo-pro.
trail: sorry to inform you but unless its powdered Gatorade End. it has HFCS.
Not anymore. Gatorade has switched from HFCS to a sucrose/dextrose blend across their “G Series” product line, meaning the ready-to-drink “Pro 02” (rebadged Endurance) should have no HFCSs.

Hahaha, awesome. With race beer-goggles I’ll be hitting on the Clydesdale podium thinking their busts are looking good…
