Ironman medals?

I just finished the Denver marathon. Had a personal best and didn’t realize the medal around my neck until i got home. I hung it next to the other medals that i received this year and was simply disapointed. Right now it is hanging next to Ironman Florida 70.3, St. George, and Syracuse 70.3. Ironman medals need a make over!!! They are not even close to the quality of Rock and Roll’s. Dear Ironman… You need a designer, inspiration, talent, or something when it comes to your medals. It seems as if there is no thought put into their medals and the quality is “straight outta compton!!!” I know the medal is really trivial, but WTF…

That is funny - 20 years ago (maybe 25) I did all the local races to win a free sandwich…it was the best I ever ate!

The CdA finisher’s medal from 2009 looks like an air freshener.

I demand that not only we have better medals, but the ceremony replicates Luke and Han’s when they destroyed the Death Star!

Fees are already outrageous - do we really to spend more money on a designer. I think there should be a option to forgo your medal for $5 and another $5 for the tshirt.

Eh I’ll settle for correct labeling. The Boulder 70.3 has 1.2 mile swim 56 mile bike 13.1 mile swim on it. I heard rumor of a corrected replacement, but two months on I haven’t seen anything. Really I didn’t even expect a medal, so when they handed it to me at the end I was surprised.

I would hate to see your reaction when you compare the freebies given at a $100 marathon vs a $600 WTC Ironman.

My nicest medal is from the rock n roll marathon in Vegas from last year, my 70.3 finishers medal not even close.

Oh the plaque that I received for 2nd place was nice also.

People keep these? Only one I’ve kept is a glass sculpture thing I got for winning my AG at a small local sprint. Thing makes a legit badass paperweight.

Pretty much, I’d much rather get a free event photo than a tshirt or medal.

My medals are all in a drawer I think…one I gave away after midnight. Bleh…what is the scrap value of them…after all, that is all they are to anyone but you.

I read about a non-profit org called medals4mettle awhile ago. They give marathon, IM, etc. medals to young kids in hospitals battling severe illnesses. I’m not affiliated with the group in anyway, but thought it was a great idea and can’t think of a better use for these medals.

Judging by the number of people in line to buy IM trophies for themselves in Kona (ranging in price from 600 to 1200), finishers medals are not sufficient indicators of accomplishment anyway. I’m sure soon enough you’ll be able to order the gold-plated version of your Ironman medals to stick in your drawer.
