Ironman Maryland Volunteer but no place to stay wtf

So I was gonna volunteer for IMMD since I did Florida and could not be more appreciative of the volunteers but I cant find a hotel within 20 miles with space?? Anyone have any ideas? Am I missing somewhere?

I’ve heard that’s a problem with that event. Just going to have to commute a little farther or share a room with someone.

Did you check Bed & Breakfasts? I like them better than generic hotels most of the time.

I’m sure someone can elaborate, but I think last year they offered camping at a local high school.

dude, did it last year and I stayed 40 min away. only place that was closer was the Grand hyatt I think the host hotel. the problem with that was it was $400/night. no thanks. 20 miles is close. book it.

That’s what I was saying that I can’t find one 20 miles away

Ha!! sorry. did my 3 min test on the bike for my ftp a little earlier…think i’m still loony. sorry about that. I stayed in Salsbury (sp?)

Camp grounds?

why not volunteer at a place closer to home that could probably use the volunteers, 10x more than ironman?

x1000.

Or if you want Ironman so badly: Suck it up, buttercup.

20 miles is only about 20 minutes by car so it’s not that bad plus the further away you are the cheaper the rooms will be.

also consider that approx 15-20% of people who sign up for the race will not start so, in the last three months 150/200 rooms could be cancelled & become available.

.

That is for Cambridge MA, not MD.

Just get a room in Easton. They have a bunch of good hotels and the drive is easy.

You’re being very generous with the 20 miles/20 minutes, traffic around there is terrible. Actually the whole town is terrible but oh well.
For the OP, I’d take the advice above and keep checking for cancelled rooms. Or screw it and camp out or sleep in your car or something. You’re not racing so don’t need to be super comfortable.

This is a longshot but a lot of the Cambridge area locals are willing to do a homestay for athletes and friends. Post something on here, about your need, or maybe someone will see your post. Locally in their Craigslist ads too.
You could end up in Salisbury or Easton but it’s worth it.

my wife did im-md last year. we had a hotel reserved someplace 30 or 40 minutes away, but kept checking the Cambridge hotels and got a room in Cambridge about two weeks before the race. people cancel out for various reasons. i think in this case, a wedding party had booked a block of rooms for the weekend, but they didn’t need as many as booked.

also, i camped at the high school for Eagleman. very convenient.

I did IMMD last year and ran into this problem. Ended up finding a great spot to stay in a private home through AirBnB but it wasn’t cheap. Was frustrated to see that starting about 3 weeks before the race many people on the IMMD Facebook page were commenting about how they were cancelling 3 of the 4 rooms, etc. that they had booked. I’m not sure why people feel the need to book so many rooms only to cancel them right before the race (and these weren’t people who had friends, families, etc cancelling out on them) when they finally decide where they want to stay. It only screws things up for others trying to make arrangements.

My suggestion would be to get on the IMMD 2015 Facebook page and wait for inevitable posts about hotel room cancellations. Good luck!

Just drive 20 minutes up 301 to Delaware and find a hotel there. No way those hotels are going to be booked. And the distance isn’t really that far, but you will need a rental car.

Yup! You should support race organizations that support the sport. Maybe you could volunteer for a Challenge race?

Did you camp outside in a tent or did they let you sleep on gym floor??? I’d jump on the gym floor in 2 seconds if available:)
