Ironman Kona - Swim & Calf Sleeves

Hi,
This might be a stupid question but are calf sleeves allowed during the swim in Kona? I would usually wear them under my wetsuit but this is a non-wetsuit swim.
or should I prepare myself to put them on in T1. Thx!

IM Rule 4.01 (f) When the use of wetsuits is prohibited (see Section 4.03), clothing covering any part
of the arms below the elbows and clothing covering any of the leg below the knee is
deemed illegal and is not permitted during the swim segment of the Race but may
be worn after completion of the swim segment; (DSQ)

Thx
.

What about your own hydration vest during the run? Was wearing one during IM Austria and IM Hamburg which was fine. Can not see anything under Section 6.01

Hydration vest is OK.

Do you typically wear them to keep your legs from swelling up too much later in the day? Interested in the thinking behind this and compression wear generally. I sometimes wear them for recovery at home

Every pro wears calf sleeves during ROTH…

I used to wear sleeves under my suit. But then at a race that was not wetsuit legal I went with long compressport socks.

They are a little tricky to put on, but I always put socks on before the bike, so it’s a few extra seconds and I’m pretty efficient t at everything else so it’s not too costly.

I hadn’t really considered it, but now that you mention it, the last 4 races I’ve done, my legs felt great the days after. So… I either didn’t go hard enough, or I’m well adapted to the load. Or maybe the compression snake oil stuff has some validity.

Most of the calf sleeves the pros are using are for aerodynamics on the bike and are not compressive.

Compression on the run is a personal preference. Personally, I hate it on the run but find it very helpful to put some on post-race for recovery. I do race in non-compressive calf sleeves (velotoze) for the aero benefits on the bike (~1sec/k in my case, YMMV).
