Ironman in Flip Flops!

I’m guessing its the July issue of Australian Triathlon magazine there is a story and photo of a competitor who wore flip flops through out the entire run leg . My Gosh how would his feet feel ? It says he drank several beers throughout the race to ease the pain . More power to the gut I say .

We have an old man that runs the Honolulu Marathon every year in those things. We use to have a man who did it barefooted but I haven’t seem him in a few years.

Aloha,

Larry

That was Glen Gorick. He completed the run dressed as “Reg Reagan”- a fictional (comedy) character on one of the football shows on OZ TV. Glen is well known here for having gone 10 times under 10 hours, inc. under 9 and placing top 10 overall. He used to race pro in the late 80s/early 90s.

In 2003 he ran as “Arfur Dunger” (an old Paul hogan-Crocodile Dundee character)with a cigarette hanging from the corner of his mouth.

He’s mentioned going serious for next year to break the 40+ AG record set this year at 9.02…watch and see.

Hmm I’ve seen guys run barefoot marathons before but never an ironman in those things , Man thats crazy.

BTW I didnt think alcohol was legal during a triathlon

He didn’t actually drink beer during the race, it was an empty beer carton that he carried for the full run while running in flip-flops.

Ahhh thanks for clearing that one up watcher ,

media sensationalism eh ! The article said his lager box got lighter as the day wore on

Us Aussies call “flip flops” THONGS, although of course a “thong” is a g-string in the US.

That would be an interisting look - a IM in a thong!

“That would be an interisting look - a IM in a thong!”

Isn’t that pretty much what Fernanda wears? Gotta love Brazillians!

A couple of years ago (I think it was '02) some guy did IM USA (Lake Placid) in cutoff jean shorts, and rode a single speed bike he’d (supposedly) pulled out of the garbage and fixed up - One of those old bikes with the ape hanger handlebars and a banana seat. I believe he finished the race in around 13-14 hours.

I wonder if that would be USAT/ITU legal???

This chick rides Centuries on that thing behind her!!!

There are some ODD people in MA.

That pic is exactly the type of bike that guy rode in 2002 (although the “boy’s” version). When I saw him going the other way on the out-and-back, I nearly crashed as I whipped my head around for a second look.

As mentioned, he ran in cutoff jeans, canvas 60’s era sneakers and knee-high socks. A local Lake Placid guy, according to the papers. He had to modify his bike to accept a front brake because that is one of IMNA’s rules.

I think he called himeself “retro man” and the bike was a schwinn stingray. Ran the mary in cutoffs and chuck taylors as well.

Well, my first bike was a hand-me-down that was pretty much like that one.

I remember it was really easy to pop wheelies on. But unstable at high speeds - I crashed badly coming down the hill at the end of our street. Maybe it was just me that was unstable at high speeds.

Now I see “chopper” bicycles for sale at our local mega-box sporting goods store. The same kind of bikes that kids have been building and customizing for the past couple of years.

damn that chick is ugly!

Scrolling thru to find posts on Lance I came across this one.

You know I ran a short while with this guy at IMA and he had a beer to his mouth for a little ways, when I said "man be careful dont let the officails see you " his reply was “Baggsy and Plucky are my best mates they wont do anything to me” At that point I had no idea who plucky was. I knew who Baggsy was . He told me he was only going to have a few and that the drinking part was part of his character he was dressed as.

But yes he was definitely drinking some beers whilst racing IMA .

Michael

And you will also find yours truely on the next page (pg 20) doing my thing out on the IMA course!!!
