Ironman Florida wheel set up

Having never raced Florida before I’m thinking what would be the better wheel set up? I have a Corima disc on the back with a Corima tri spoke up front ( both tubs), or should I use the Mavic Cosmic Carbons? (clinchers). I have heard it gets windy. I’m 85K in weight by the way, cheers

Ride the disc. It was only windy (enough to hold on tight) last year when we rode between the hotels on the first couple miles of the ride. I wouldn’t worry too much about it since the course is really really flat.

No question – disc any day of the week.

A disc and the deepest wheel on front you are comfortable riding. IMFL is as simple a course for wheels as it gets.

Go with a double disk set-up…I have heard it is pretty fast.

Right thats it then, disc it is with the tri spoke up front.

I had heard that if you are in the M35-39 age group that riding a road bike, no aero bars and with shallow section box rims is the best way to go, hands down …

I’m going with a disc in the back and a zipp 808 up front. I think that is pretty much as close as you can get to two discs, I guess except for a 100mm up front.

No Way that exact wheel set up with tires only 50% inflated is for the men 40-44 ag

All kidding aside as someone mentioned the winds at IMF have only been bad at the very start or beginning when you are in between 10+ story condo’s on beach front. I have riddden and will continue to ride a renn disc and a hed3 front. When you leave the beach front area your are in winding flat roads with large sections of scrub pines on both sides of the roads that do a decent job of blocking cross winds.

Peace,
RF

Question, if its so flat and fast how come the fastest time is 8:26, when Austria etc its 8:06 and 7:54 for Roth?

Probably because it is only about three weeks from Kona.

Flat doesn’t necessarily mean fast: Austria has a short uphill and a long downhill section on the bike, which a lot of people find easier than a dead flat 180k tt. IMF has also seen questions over the length of the course (in the first couple of years, plenty of people saw 183kms on their computers after the ride), while any questions about the course at Roth have centred around whether it’s actually as far as claimed: the organisers swear it is the full 112m, but say that superior pavement quality, crowd support and topography make it super-quick. The swims at both Austria and Roth (inland water) are probably faster than IMF (sea, with some chop and/or current some years), and the run at Roth is generally thought to be faster because a lot of it takes place on trails rather than pavement and doesn’t hand out such a beating to runners’ legs. Finally, IMF has pretty long transitions relative to the other races. There isn’t a race in the universe that’s flatter than Florida, but there are plenty which might be faster.

Cheers Gord, this will be my 4th IM but first IM with a sea swim. Really looking forward to it now, I do quite a bit of TT’ing so hoping for a quick bike section and then hopie my legs will be up to a decent run, fingers crossed.
