Tough weekend for Ironman. Tough weekend for a lot of people. Thoughts go out to all that are effected.
Always unfortunate when these events face cancellations but the more pressing issue is the lives lost and devastated.
100%
My neighbors left this morning (their first 70.3) and headed out wondering if the race would happen.
@ironclm I hope you called them if they where driving #comeback
The Ironman World Champs in Nice last Sunday dodged this bullet (albeit far less extreme conditions). The heavy rain and thunderstorms hit Nice (worse up at 3000 ft in the Alpes-Maritime) a few hours after the last competitors had finished before dawn on Monday. In those conditions I have no doubt that the IMWC would’ve been cancelled (or postponed).
100% I was present and while in town it was pretty calm that Nice mountain bike course would have been a death trap for the athletes.
Off topic but I wonder whether going for the 70.3 course turning right at Vence and going over the col and two laps of that might have worked. Minimises time on higher ground. Think “death trap” is hyperbolic btw.
I did not call them, but they got the news and they turned around and drove back to Atlanta, rented an Airbnb, and everyone ran a half marathon this morning for the fun of it.
