iPhone 4 Cradle/Mount for Tri/TT & Road Bike

Hello All,

I’m looking to get a iPhone 4 cradle for my TT bike to replace the cateye computer I currently have on there. Do you recommend doing this? If so, which ones should I look at? Links would be appreciated.

I want to do this because I want to take advantage of the navigation (for long Training rides) and be able to facetime (I have 3G Facebreak and you can also use the free Fring App) my wife / newborn while I am on the bike at Ironman without havingto whip out my phone. I can take advantage of these free cycling apps such as cyclemeter etc.

They will not be able to attend as my son was just born 4 weeks ago (7/23).

Plus, I’m from Milpitas CA and do not want to drive to Tempe Arizona with my baby (plus do not want my baby out too long). Therefore, I will be traveling to Arizona by myself. =-(

Pfft…I drove from SoCal to CdA by myself with my 3 kids (9,6,18 mo.) in June, so quit yer bitchin.

Seriously though…take the wife and kid. I know from experience that if you start them early on long road trips, they learn to tolerate them much better when older. Plus, there are awesome areas in Tempe where they can just relax and wait for you to go by…and lots of other kids and families doing the same thing.

On topic…phone on tbd bike is a bad idea.

Most of the people that I have known that wanted to do this ended up making/designing there own because the ones out in the market seemed to flimsy and they didnt trust them to keep the phone on the bike. If you can make one yourself sounds like a good idea for training rides.

However if I am reading this correctly you are wanting to or planning on riding IMAZ with your iPhone as your computer. If your not aware of it, that is illegal per IM rules and subject to disqualification. Its rule 17 in most of the athlete guides for any IM. Would hate to see you get DQ’d over something like this.

  1. Communication devices of any type, such as cell phones and two-way radios are strictly prohibited during
competition. Use of such devices will result in disqualification.

I’m going to subscribe!

what are you going to do to keep the sweat off your phone? is the Otter case enough?

Hi John,

There’s a company called VeloComp that makes an iPhone-based bike computer and powermeter. It’s called the iBike, and mounts quite securely on your stem, and protects your phone from sweat and rain while still allowing you to use the device. Depending on whether you get the powermeter or simple bike computer model, the case includes the necessary hardware to receive ANT+ data from speed/cadence and heart-rate sensors. It also uses the GPS in the iPhone. If you get the powermeter version it does a reasonably good job of deriving power by measuring opposing forces and then using Newton’s laws of physics to calculate what the input power would have to be.

In answer to another poster’s point about not being able to use your iPhone during a race, I specifically got permission from the race director before using my iBike during Ironman South Africa. Once they realized I was not plugging in headphone, and was using the phone as a powermeter, they were just fine with it.

Regards,
David.

We saw stuff from Wahoo Fitness at the 2011 Dealer Camp and I think that is exactly what you are looking for.

Except he doesn’t want to use it just as a power meter he wants to use it as a phone during the race.

Yeah, can’t use it as a phone, that definitely won’t fly…
