Involuntary muscle jerks

The other day my wife made the comment that I ‘twitched’ a lot in bed, so I started paying attention, and while I’m relaxed in bed (and apparently sleeping), I get these random muscle jerks. It’s not like I have a muscle spasm…it’s a full blown jerk. I guess I’ve kicked her a few times in the middle of the night. The one’s I’ve noticed seem to mostly be with my legs, making my knee jerk forward or my leg kick down straight, and my shoulders where one shoulder will jerk upward. In fact, sitting here typing this, I just felt my left glute randomly tense up and release.

This does seem to happen more after hard training days, or long days where my hydration isn’t optimal. Anyone else experience this?

I get that occasionally. Sitting or laying down, and all of the sudden, a muscle decides its going to twitch. Not sieze, just flickering contractions. Occasionally will get the same thing in my foot or the whole quadricep region. No idea what causes it, but I agree that it is likely related to hard training. Make sure you’re properly hydrated, make sure you’re getting enough electrolytes. I always found that doing some easy body weight exercises and stretching makes things clear up.

See the “Restless Legs” thread currently being discussed.

Likely issue is electrolyte imbalance from hard training and fatigued muscles, potassium and magnesium can help.

…could be normal myoclonus when you’re falling asleep. I dunno about your quivering butt though.
