Intriguing: 70.3 Worlds 2027 in California?

Yes along with Sacramento. But it seems Oceanside is becoming the odds on favorite.

I just want to bring this excellent reply back to the top. Oceanside’s bike course doesn’t just need TLC, it is a turd. There are many better options for a WC, in CA no less.

Having just raced in Marbella, the bike course was excellent. Yes, very difficult coming from a flat state in the US, but the road quality was excellent and made for a world championship level course. Oceanside would be such a let down unless the course was changed to bypass the base.

Oceanside would be great, i’ve always dreamt of racing there, vibes seems very cool. My only and big concern is about getting there, coming from EU and not having the standard Mare a Gogo face

Fair enough. I didn’t mention politics though, I mentioned visa as in travel visa, which is a very real and big issue and not necessarily related to politics.

Anyway, it is what it is. I won’t pollute the thread further.

Was Sacramento really a contender? Would be such a letdown

When is the expected announcement for the 2027 location? I received something from IM Muncie (July 2026) saying that they would be the first championship qualifier race for 2027.

I don’t know.

I guess we can only go on precedent (and the pandemic disruption screwed things up). Marbella was announced on 24th January 2024 so it’s clearly ‘due’.

A month on: still no announcement. Bump.

Yeah we are into March. The first qualifer races are 4 months away now. I am kind of hoping that they can’t get anything sorted out and they go back to Taupo or Nice steps in

Yes, I considered but decided not to suggest that, coming to an agreement with Nice Ville - they’ll have one set up for 2028 already. I guess the downside of sequential venues is the loss of novelty (see also Kona!!). But having been to Nice in 2019 and in 2024 it is such an excellent, championship venue that repetition would be welcome.
New Zealand is ‘iconic’ but perhaps a 5 year cycle to balance its ‘othersideof the world’ downside.

I have been to Nice/Nice area 5x on vacation from Canada (only once was for IM France 2010) and I am heading back for 70.3 Worlds this year. While Nice is locked in for 2026 and 2028, it seems they could easily step in for 2027 and even 2029 (although this decision does not need to be visited for at least 2 more years to allow for Gulf conflicts to subside).

I wonder if closing down a municipality for two days is a lift too much in all US markets given car focused infra and culture after St. George support waned.

I’m a fan of Taupo too, but I do wonder if Ironman is a little gun shy of returning so soon when you look at Ironman/70.3 New Zealand attendance. About 1200 raced each, which is pretty solid numbers combined. How much will that number drop if they hold Worlds there? Maybe it doesn’t matter if Worlds will bring in 5000 again.

I am guessing the announcement on US venue is bogged down with town council approvals for two days, or in the case of Oceanside, military readiness limitations (you can probably cancel a local half IM due to a military conflict, but a global worlds that is at the whims of a General shutting down the course may be too much of a risk?)

If they return to Taupo in 2027, that’s a three year gap. Seems doable.

OK bumping this thread.

So what’s the hold up. There are qualification races starting in July for 2027. I would like to decide is my July race is an A event (to qual for somewhere I want to go to in 2027), or if I just train thru it with no taper. I just signed up for Swimming Masters Nationals last week of May so either I am training thru Masters Nationals for an A tri event in July, or I am treating Swimming Masters nationals last weekend of May as the main event in the May to July window. I’ll just back off on running if don’t need to run fast (enough) in July for a qualifier. I think @Triathletetoth had a dilemma on deciding how to structure training relative to a qual event (yes I realize first world problems as I am not having to train for an event on Kharg Island)

I am planning on WTC long course champs in Edmonton.
Ironman 70.3 worlds would be a second thought they are too slow to plan ahead and confirm dates and locations. at least we allknow kona will be in kona now.

Big announcement at Oceanside incoming?

Maybe they are just closing down the base and handing it over to Ironman and deploying the unit permanently to Kharg Island

Any chance they are saving the announcement to coincide with the Oceanside 70.3 next week? (@Bryancd @sportstats @rrheisler @Ironmandad )

Did a town council minutes search for Oceanside, Madison, Chatanooga, Sarcramento and found nothing debated/signed off yet
