Insurance for Triathlon Event Sponsors

Our wheel/wetsuit company is sponsoring a local triathlon and the promotor requires insurance (obviously). We have spoken to numerous insurance companies but are having a tough time getting anyone to write a policy.

Does anyone have any ideas for an insurance company that deals regularly with this type of situation? Thanks!

How about USAT???

i don’t understand. you’re the sponsor of the race, and the promoter of the race is requiring the sponsor to have event insurance of some sort?

That’s interesting. I usually only get insurance requests for the large-scale events like Sea Otter or Ironman.

why would the event promoter, even sea otter, require insurance of a sponsor? is it because you’re doing demos, as in, you’ve got a fleet of bikes people are going to ride, and they want you to have product liability insurance for that?

No, they even require it for exhibitors (vendors not doing demos). I’m sure it’s part of the event’s insurance coverage or the contract with the host site that each vendor needs to provide their own supplemental insurance. Like I said, this is pretty typical for the big events…Sea Otter, WTC events, marathons, Interbike, etc. I’ve never had a small or mid-sized race ask for proof of insurance.

wow. if an event asked me, an exhibitor or sponsor, to show proof of insurance, i’d tell them to go eff themselves. that’s what they buy event insurance for. not only that, as a sponsor i would require the event to provide me a cert of insurance.

How about USAT???

Yes, they specifically cover sponsors.

It might help if you could elaborate a bit

Are you just a sponsor or also providing a service?
What type of coverage are they requesting?

I know my event and timing company is sometimes asked to show that we have our own business/workers comp/etc insurance (you’d be suprised how few timers have this) Most of the time it is when it is a city or county hiring us and we have to sign a contract a a sub contractor to the city/county.

I’ve never been asked to provide insurance for a race that my store is sponsoring though

We are sponsoring the bike leg of a triathlon. The only service we’re providing is rental of wheels, wetsuits, and TT bikes. The promotor (in the contract) specified that the Promoter be a named insured on OUR policy for the event.

I didn’t think it would be this difficult to find a company wiling to insure this type of arrangement.

Sounds like a call to USAT is in order.

Dan is correct. That makes no sense?

Your promotor has a very good lawyer because they are really covering their ass. So if someone gets hurt on the bike course will they go after you first, then the race director? You never want to be first in that line

I guess you could get your own USAT sanction for the race but it would just be the same thing that they already have (if they are a USAT event)

It really sounds odd to me. If you rent a wetsuit or wheels your agreement is with the end user anyhow, not the race director

Good luck

doesn’t make sence but i use this guy’s http://www.fdean.com/

I have booths at all of the local tri’s and running races. Two of the races this year have required that I have proof of insurance in order to have a booth. This is the first time these races have had this requirement.
