Inside SUV bike mounts

Any one use an inside the SUV bike fork mount to transport your bike? I have a small suv that can fit my bike in with plenty of space, but keeping it upright is the hard part. I have seen a couple and read a few articles suggesting buying a piece of wood and screwing in a cheap fork mount from Performance. Any thoughts or suggestions. I am mechanically retarded so my preference would be to buy something made for this than to try and build one (i.e. the wood idea).

Yup, I just bought one of these:

This is what I have done. My Trooper has cargo tie down hardware in the floor. I slotted the wood to fit over these and use simple pins (similar to hitch pins) to hold the wood secure. I have several mounting holes for the fork mounts to fit different bikes (some are longer, some wider).

I had to mount this rig longways to be able to use it with my tri bike. But with the pins it’s easy to change or completely remove.

I made my own rack to hold 4 bikes inside my yukon. It has third row seats that I haven’t used since day one of buying it. I bought a 1x8 and drilled 4 thule fork mounts into it. Then used some u-bolts to bolt the rack to the mounts already in the floor from the third row seats. Works great.

The other inside the vehicle option that I am working on bringing to market in 2014, having suffered this exact problem with my bike in my wagon, is CycleRest, www.cyclerest.com, it is a patent pending much more convenient and portable than a few fork mounts on a 2x4 and can remain installed with no impact on usability of the cargo area. Be sure to sign up for a pre-order or follow on twitter @cycle_rest or Facebook www.facebook.com/cyclerest.

Does anyone have pics of their setups? I am interested in attempting this!

Good luck with your product. Looks interesting. But, I got a good chuckle out of the marketing-speak above. Plus, even if true, my all-in cost for the 2x4 setup is about $10. Considerably less than your product.

Does the 100 bucks include something to hold your detached front wheel upright, as in the pic on your website?

The front wheel is held in place by being placed between the bike and the left seat that is still upright. So that was not initially planned, but we could easily include a few velcro straps that way the way the front wheel could easily be secured to the bike frame or rear wheel, would that work for you?

x2 Put on a 2x4 so we can take it in and out.

I thought from the photo there might be some sort of rear plastic/rubber divider that held the wheel upright while keeping it away from the other wheel and frame. Guess it’s just your particular vehicle/seat configuration. Sorry, $100 is too steep for me for just the headrest-mounted fork mount. Plus my rear headrests don’t have posts, so wouldn’t work for me anyway. Best of luck with your venture though.

Neat idea, that fork mount on a headrest. I might have to juryrig something similar with some scrap plywood.

For interior SUV/minivan transport, I’ve used the Rhode Gear ‘Pro Truck Shuttle’ for years. I don’t think it’s still commercially available (ebay?), but the design is simple and could be easily duplicated. Easy in/out, secure, unobtrusive, etc.

This looks cool, but I’m wondering if this would work with aerobars on the bike, especially if there is a passenger.
