Inner Knee Pain

One of my running partners has recently started getting pain on the inside of his left knee. He says it aches for the first 5 mins of running, goes away, but then later in the day it’s excruciating. By the next morning it’s back to a dull ache, but he says he also feels “oozing” in the inner side of the joint. However, it’s not swollen or painful to the touch.

He’s not doing a high volume (40 a week. Usually he’s at 50), but he is about 6 weeks into a Tuesday night speed session. They run on a 200m track. Obviously, I think the track is the culprit, but he insists it’s something else.

The pain seems like a “normal” injury, but the oozing sounds serious. I’ve never had any knee issues so I can’t really comment on his condition. Does this symptom sound like anything to anyone?

Also… other than taking a break from the track and cutting back some/completely for a couple weeks, does anyone have any advice? I think his quads are week, but I’m not sure.

Thanks!

Are you his internist or what?

Oozing is not a typical human symptom. Be very careful, this may be an alien “Visitor” in disguise.

Advice? Go to a doctor.

I keep forgetting how unhelpful and obnoxious this forum can be when you’re looking for advice.

I’ve had inner knee pain while running as well. I started triathlon last February, and had knee pain February-April. I was not able to run during training, and the knee pain was excruciating after the races. I took two full months off from running in the summer, and I was pain-free up until a few weeks ago when I ran in the snow. I will be visiting a doctor sometime this week. I will let you know what I found out, but I’d definitely recommend going to a doctor.

I had inner, lower knee pain that was similar. I finally caved and went to an ortho to find out I had a high tibial stress. Wish I’d gone right away.
