Inner knee pain after cycling - Cleat movement?

Good day everyone,

Hoping for some advice on what to change before I go tinkering on my own.

Back story:

I had a bike fit late last year. Everything went great and I feel better on the bike. I didn’t bike hard during the fit just some good spinning action. After my fit I didn’t bike much due to the holidays and then I got Covid so just getting back on the trainer now.
After some good rides, I’m finding my left inner knee has some pain. It’s even worse the next day, but goes away and I’m good to continue training. At first I thought it was just some rust from the time off, but it’s been 3 rides in a row now so something is definitely off. I’ve had this problem before when I “fit” myself and it was a very simple fix. I adjusted my cleats and all was normal again.

Before I go adjusting them now, does anyone have experience with what way to move the cleats? My pain is on my left knee on the inner side.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hey there, maybe some of the fitters here will chime in. I’m not a bike fitter but had the same issue.
Can you provide the following?

A) What kind of pedal/shoe system do you have?
B) If you have Shimano, what color cleat do you have with it?

Reason I ask is, I had Speedplay & moved to Shimano & had the same issue, but all it took was a cleat that had more float (the yellow ones). In the past, between Shimano and my Speedplays, I had Look pedals. I remember having more issues with those each time I bought new shoes.

  1. It could be you need a “shim” between the shoe bottom & your cleat.
  2. You could be too far forward or back on your cleat position (I ended up slamming my cleats all the way back & it solved the issue)–because it took pressure off the front of my knee.
  3. You may need a more supportive foot bed (or in combination with your cleat).
  4. Check the “toe-in” on the cleat, you may need to angle it outward to the left, or inward to the right, or possibly slide the entire thing AWAY from the center of the bike.

Just a few thoughts, it will take trial & error if you don’t go back to your bike fitter. Which–if done recently, they should not have an issue with you coming in for a slight adjustment since it doesn’t seem right in the first place. Good luck!
