Ingebrigtsen brothers swimming a 50

Saw this posted over at letsrun earlier today though when I clicked over to YouTube it looks like it’s at least 10 months old. No idea if there is any context, looks like they were just having a race for fun in the pool. Henrik on the bottom, Fillip in the middle, and Jakob on top.

Thought it was kinda interesting as it really illustrates how how important technique is with swimming. Jakob is one of the best middle distance runners in history. I’m sure his lung capacity and VO2 max are on another level. But it looks like he barely made it to the other side of the pool

Technique is not “silo-ed” off from everything else. An athlete can’t separate out technique from fitness in swimming or really in any of the disciplines of triathlon. It’s the perception of the brain of how easy or difficult the movement is. It’s strength, conditioning and fitness specific to that movement. You get the technique from making the movement over and over again with a lot of focus and the fitness and conditioning are byproducts of that training.

I hope this helps.

Thank God… can you imagine the massive Norwegian circle jerk that would have ensued on here?

But it looks like he barely made it to the other side of the pool

yep next you would have stephen seiler giving out swim advice

I don’t see any link???

Shoot. My bad. Added a link to the OP

True. I imagine Jakob doesn’t have much upper body strength (would just be wasted mass for him) which probably doesn’t help either

Thanks, interesting clip!!!

Swimming is such a bizarre and special discipline. The best runners would still have above average FTP on a bike and vice versa but power/fitness is so low on the totem pole for swimming until you get to high levels.
And on the flip side it’s easy for any retired competitive swimmer to smoke almost any fitter person in the water even if they haven’t worked out in decades.

OTOH, a very fit swimmer can usually pick up cycling pretty fast. His/her running will vary based mainly on how big he/she is. A skinny distance swimmer can generally run pretty well and bike pretty well right off the bat.
