Raced IMMD last week. Showed up in great form, real nice taper and ready to race. Ive been using Infinite Nutrition in all my races and love the stuff…never had a problem with it. So I’m on the bike ( which was cut to 100 miles because of the weather) and the first 50 miles I feel great. Holding my target watts and they feel stupid easy, but I stay there + a few but just a little more ( 4 watts). I drink 300 calories/hour so 1/2 bottle every half hour but by mile 40-50 I go to drink and I start noticing that my stomach is full and sloshing around. Never happened to me before. I was not absorbing the all liquid nutrition as I had in the past. by mile 60 I start to notice a little stiffness and aches in the quads. I’m getting a little concerned at this point so I back off the watts by about 30 for the remainder of the race. I get into T2 feeling " not right" but no cramps but I realize that I could only hold down 3 bottles when I usually get down 6 + I start to run. First mile is right on but the tightness in the quads gets worse. Mile 2 I slow down and take some more Infinite but I’m still full of the stuff. Mile 3 I have a horrible leg cramp. I try to walk / run it off hoping that I will absorb some of this stuff so I can get back to the run. I did this till 10 miles then pulled the plug.
The only thing I could think of was it was 60-65 degreed out and 100% humidity/raining out and I never felt " warm" was not sweating enough and for that reason, was unable to absorb the drink. Has this every happened to anyone? I called Infinite solution and they suggested that I make a cooler weather solution with less sodium in it ( I have a high sweat rate and use a lot of salt in my mix). One thing to note is that I on purpose did not over hydrate before this race, only drank 3 bottles and when I got to T2 I STILL had to take a piss! I am sure I did not over bike as this race was 15 watts less than a training ride of the same distance that I had done only 3 weeks prior to this one. This is not a knock ofthis product…I really love it, I just want to know if anyone has had this problem and if so what did you do or what do others recommend? Add solid food to it? Ditch it al together when its that wet/humid and cool? thanks.
I did IMMD last weekend and I also use Infinite in my nutrition plan. I think you have the answer in the cooler temperatures.
I am local and I rode the course two and four weeks before the event and on both rides consumed 5 bottles without having to pee.
The day of IMMD, I added more solid nutrition and only used half of the 3 bottles of Infinite that I had available (and still had to pee at the end!).
So the bottom line for me is yes, cooler temp greatly reduces capacity/need for liquid consumption.
Did you take anything else before the race or the day before that might have upset your stomach like an anti-inflamatory or anything like that? If you have had a lot of success with Infinite before in races I would look at other things that could have messed with your digestion system as well.
And then there is that thing that drives us all crazy where our bodies decides to do something completely random on one of our biggest days and we really don’t have any rhyme or reason for it.
I have done rides ( hard) that were about the same temp, and maybe even cooler and had no problem, but this was the first time I was using it in the wet conditions. Maybe I should have trialed this nutrition plan in the rain before IMMD. Did not want to get my bike wet

Nope. I do the same routine form 2 days out. Pasta, and more pasta, then the morning of the race 2 cinnamon raisin bagels from Dunkin Donuts…not toasted, nothing on it.
