Industry Warranty for Apparel. Unimpressed with Zipp?

I just got off the phone with zipp, called them about a defective clothing product, and was
informed that the industry standard is that apparel is NOT covered by warranty.

Say it ain’t so??? I was under impression that most companies stay behind they products.
To make a long story short Zipp told me to take a hike with my warranty issue and that they don’t offer any.
NICE!!! very unimpressed

Depends on what the issue was, how old the product is, etc.

This is more of a case of Zipp being dinks… search and you’ll see lots of customer service complaints about Zipp and how they need to adopt Quarq’s (their sister company) practices.

I know Sugoi stands behind their stuff and I’m sure Desoto does too, but I’ve never had to ask Emilio to replace anything.

not that old, the issue was falling separation at seams.
not that point, I expected better from zipp truth be told

Louis Garneau has been good the few times I had issues.

What was the issue? How old was the product you were trying to get a warranty from?

The problem with apparel (meaning tri suits, shirts, clothing, jerseys, etc) is that the wear and tear from normal use/abuse makes a warranty issues practically impossible to distinguish between a wear and tear (or abuse or negligence) issue.

Exception to that might be the seams coming undone or something within a few days of purchase.

But if you’re coming back a few months or a year after your purchase and asking for a warranty repair for a tear or something - then yeah - no soup for you. Doesn’t make sense to ask for that imo.

How old is “not that old”?

Again, apparel is a different beast because of the blurred lines.

I’m not defending Zipp (their CS is pretty bottom of the barrel from what I understand) but there’s certain expectations one should have with apparel and defects. If it “started separating at the seams” months after purchase - then you’re in a very gray area imo.

From last year, worn a few times.
again, not the point. Sugoi would replace in a heart beat, and not even question it.
Zipp was actually trying to tell me that it was standard industry practice NOT to warrant apparel.
I just laughed at that. #zippwarrantysucks

Zipps warranty and CS does suck from what I understand - BUT they’re absolutely right that it’s not industry standard to warranty apparel in the same way you would wheels or wetsuits or something similar. It’s just the way it is.

Now, some companies may go above and beyond that (Sugoi, DeSoto, Kiwami just to name a few) - but they’re the exception rather than the rule.

Go outside of triathlon and try to get a pair of running shorts warrantied or a pair of jammers warrantied. It just doesn’t happen.

Here is another one, I wrote on their facebook page about today’s experience and
the post was IMMEDIATELY deleted by them. WHOA!

I disagree 100%. Any of our vendors will take back a piece of clothing that has seams falling apart. We just did it for some Asics shorts a couple days ago, and I’m not worried at all about them denying the credit.

Typically there are limits of a year from the date of purchase, but we can usually extend it some.

Perhaps that’s another benefit of buying local?

You’re arguing apples and oranges.

Great customer service from a local running store is different than a manufacturer putting together a warranty.

Check with ASics regarding their apparel warranties. It’s not 1 year and the warranty only covers very specific circumstances.

I can’t imagine ASICS not covering any one of their products.
I’ve had to deal with saucony in the past and they were extremely supportive.

On apparel purchased a year ago - it’s unlikely most companies will honor any kind of warranty.

Listen - I don’t disagree with you about Zipp’s CS sucking (the Facebook thing really seals it) - but the expectations to get a year old apparel product warrantied is unrealistic imo.

How else do you expect them to sell their products so cheaply?

Seriously tho, apparel warranties aren’t the norm.

Yeah, because companies that use digital media for marketing purposes should just let people post whatever they want, anytime they want.

I trust the pink font wasn’t necessary…

I had a pair of year old DeSoto tribibs that started to have the stitching around the pad come loose. Mailed them to DeSoto and got them back good as new for $0.00.

The only warranty standard that matters is the one the manufacturer adheres to, DeSoto’s is VERY good.

it’s this timeline feature! my bad. comment still there

that’s the way to warranty an item.
