Has anyone ever rigged up some kind of indoor bike trainer for pretty young (under 7 years old) kids? This is not for putting in mega miles for a child, more just having a place to have fun, and to burn off some pent-up energy during a long cold winter. Our son sees us on our indoor bikes (rollers and a fluid trainer) and, big surprise, wants his own. He has a bike, but I don’t yet know if/how we can rig up something workable for him. Our main objective is safety, so this would have to be some kind of stationary device. Second objective is low cost, so I am totally open to fabricating something of my own from some off-the-shelf stuff.
i have an old bike nashbar trainer that I can put the kids bike on. its not a mag trainer and relies on the weight of the rider on the roller. you could also try some training wheels on blocks to lift the rear wheel up. if you have rear calliper brakes just put them on lightly for some resistance. i find the kids don’t last too long and prefer the treadmill and some light dumbells and pulley weights to keep them busy .
I put my daughter’s bike on my Kurt Kinetic and let her spin for a while. I don’t engage the resistance unit, and since the wheels are so small, I had to put a box under the riser ring to level the bike out. She’s only 4, so I did it just for her to have fun with, not really for exercise.
What about buying training wheels, attaching to bike, and take off the little wheels and screw it into some raised wood block or keeping wheels on and put some books under the two (thus raising the middle rear wheel off the ground?)

Maybe a set of rollers with a fork mount? Might have to modify the fork mount to get the right height, but that should be relatively simple and safe solution otherwise.

I didn’t engage the resistance unit, I just let her screw around for a few minutes.
We did. But nothing too extensive. Found an old performance bike mag trainer (free, by the side of the road), popped in our son’s 16"-wheel bmx-type bike, then propped up the front wheel with some bigger items to level the wheel relative to the height of the rear wheel, and he rode it with no resistance (resistance unit did not reach up to the rear wheel). But, even at 5 yrs old, he seems to like it just like it is. And he stays on it for quite a while, as long as mom is riding her trainer next to him.
I have done some fun 30-50 minute rides with my 8 year old son. We have two computrainers and he really digs the virtual reality aspect of it. Not practical to run out and buy two CT trainers, but it is pretty cool.
