Indoor trainer desk - DIY

For people who have an indoor trainer desk, what do you have and what would you do differently?

I’m not about to spend the money on a Wahoo desk, and since I’m about to be getting a new office desk from IKEA, I’ll have some materials (i.e. my old pressboard freebie) to build a trainer desk to exactly what I need.

Thinking I want space for a small fan, wireless keyboard and mouse, my phone, and maybe a little charging station / power outlet.

Whaddaya got?

oh, and how high would you make it? I’m thinking that I want the keyboard to be level with my brake hoods (road bike). But maybe a bit higher?

make sure to get cutouts for water bottles and places to hook some towels
.

I bought a keyboard stand from a music store. It’s X shaped. Then bought a piece of laminated shelving at Home Depot. Think it’s 24" x 12 or 16". Fits my laptop with about 4-5" clearance on each side. Keep my tv remote, headphones and a folded towel on the sides of the laptop. Comes up to the brake hoods of my road bike.

I have a rolling overbed table from Amazon for $45… height adjustable, laptop/dock sits on top, along with remotes for the fan/Bose dock/TV. The dock means I can just remove the laptop without having to faff with unplugging cables (and plugging them back in when I bring the laptop back). I added a few of these to keep cables in place.

If I was going to modify it more:

  • drill holes for bottle holders or get something that clamps to the table
  • hooks for towels
  • some kind of holder for the remotes
  • maybe attach a power strip to the underside

Left over PVC pipe from a previous project and a scrap piece of shelving for the desk top. Power strip mounted on the underside of the wood. Bonus points for internally routing the cords for the ant+ dongle and the power strip inside the PVC table legs. Because, everyone knows internal cables are more aero.

Mine is similar to this, except no where near as neat!

oooh, that’s nice!!!

that is a cool idea, one other option that might be an interesting thought exercise/ test is to add some sand into the legs to make the base heavier and maybe more stable?

I was actually thinking of expanding my idea to build a full platform for the bike & trainer, with the desk built in, so I can just slide the whole setup from the side of the room to the TV when I want to ride, and quickly put it away when done.

I did something similar with PVC and painted it black. I have to cut it down/lower it now that I have a true TT bike but it does the job. I have a clear piece of plexiglass as the base since I had it laying around. There’s enough of a gap between the plexiglass and the top rectangle to slide cords between them and it holds it well. Also the mid bar keeps it steady and lets me hang my HR monitor, spare tube, couple other things.

I put the top of my desk on drawer slides so it can slide towards me (just higher than handlebars). Can be very helpful if you are trying to do any typing or multitasking riding/work.

interesting idea, I have my trainer on a rocker plate so I need the two to be independent. I find the option I have right now though it works OK is a bit flimsy, so I have been thinking of a new option so this thread has been a good place to get ideas.

I think you could still do that setup with a rocker plate. the desk would be mounted to the base rather than the rocker itself.

Use a variety of desks but as I highlighted many moons ago in this best cheap cycling desk, medical overbed makes great portable desks and double as portable workstand for tools why wrenching on your bike. I have noticed these have creeped up in prices over last few years. I complained to one of the companies that there desks were getting too expensive and they gave me a discount code which is no longer valid. May need to reach out to this company again. The following Invacare bed is the one I own and it works great.

Yeah, I’ve seen that, but it’s not exactly what I want. Close, but not quite, which is why I’m planning on doing the custom route.

I have a music stand tilted sideways for my laptop and phone. It gets stashed under the bed when I’m not riding.

If I had to do anything different? Buy an actual house so I didn’t have to work out in the living room (•‿•)
