There are some older threads on this topic, but I wanted to get some 2024 / 2025 opinions, especially with currently ongoing Black Friday sales. Does anyone use the incident cameras, like the Garmin Varia RCT715 or the Cycliq Fly 6 / Fly 12 system? Or use action cameras, like a Go Pro, to be able to record incidents? Are they helpful for a US-based cyclist for providing evidence in the event of an accident or incident with a threatening person?
I typically choose cycling routes that are low risk for incidents with cars or angry motorists, but I’m considering cameras just in case. Here are some of my thoughts:
- The Garmin Varia RCT715 and a helmet mounted Go Pro. I already own a Go Pro and the RCT715 is $299 on Backcountry, so this set up is cheaper for me than Cycliq’s Fly 6 / 12 Black Friday bundle ($583).
- Just a Go Pro. I have a regular Garmin Varia radar unit and a rear light, so I don’t need the radar feature of the RCT715. I could mount the Go Pro on my seat post and use it like I would the RCT715.
- I’ve also considered a Insta360 X4 ($425), but I read these cameras don’t pick up license plates too well and probably doesn’t have the battery life I need for a long ride. Maybe I could use it in combination with my Go Pro. I can also use the X4 for all sorts of fun things, cycling or otherwise (thanks SAFA Brian)
