This seems like an epic destination race and challenge. Has anyone here done it that can share their experiences?

Wow, that sounds awesome - I hope to do the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu at some point (probably around 2016), and that would be a good way of doing it.

My son and I have talked about it…more and more recently, to my wifes disgust.
I suspect my asthma and heart issues may preclude me from taking part in a race that finishes at over 15,000 feet! I will see however.
I have heard that it sells out fast and that if you want to do it you need to book several years in advance.
My son gave me a book on ultra running, for my 50th birthday. The Machu Picchu race is in the book. We get it off the shelf and read it for a few days and wifey puts it away, so we don’t get too keen and empty the savings account
The original Inca Trail Marathon (2012 is the 17th Anniversary) is offered by Andes Adventures

Maybe its time we set up an ST group to go. 2014 anyone?
I’ve hiked it. From Km 82, IIRC.
Would be a kick butt Trail Race. The Incas must’ve been small peeps. Where there are stairs, they are tight. There’s one section, towards the end, where it does a very steep 2000 foot elevation drop on these small steps. Also, you’re along the edge of a cliff for much of it. The route is prone to fog. The highest elevation is around 14,000 feet at Dead Woman Pass and you hit that early on.
All that said, coming down the ramp, from the Gate of the Sun, with Machu Pichu spread out in all it’s glory, after a twenty something mile run, would have to be one of lifes high points.
