In IM do you have to wear a bib on your jersey on the bike or is the bike number enough?

If you have to wear a bib number how do most attach it? Seems like it would create a bit of drag pinned on your back. Thought about a number belt and just turning it around for the run but still on the bike it’s going to be flapping around. I was just curious if the officials won’t let you out of the bike transition if you don’t have your bib on your back?

As far as I know, you must wear the number on your jersey or on a race belt.

prerace meetings and rulebooks state that the number must be worn. most people either wear a number belt and flip it around in t2, or change in t2 and have the number pre-attached to the back of the cycling top and the front of the running top. i’d make sure i was wearing it rather than take a chance on being pulled off the bike course.

Race belt…wear it on the back on the bike…flip it around to the front for the run. Quick and easy.

Yep, it has to be worn on the bike. If you get a penalty they need to be able to “mark” it.

yes, you need to have it on your back so it can be seen. i’ve pinned and sewn it and am happiest with the latter arrangement. i’m not charmed with the racebelt thing for the bike for a couple of reasons. 1] i’m so slow/out there forever, i don’t want something else around my waist to bend over and feel constantly. 2]. it flaps around on a belt, so sewing it down, around all four sides, keeps it from doing that.
granted, sewing it down takes a bit of time and care, but it’s been well worth it to me, so i still go with that arrangement. actually, i do that for the singlet i use on the run, too.

So, they give you two “copies” of the number to use?

You get two race numbers - one for the bike and one for the run.

so i’ve seen a lot of pictures where the number seems to be crumbled up or hidden under a jersey (to keep it out of the wind). is this legal? do they nail people for it?

I crumble mine up every race and then smooth it out and put it on the race belt.

My wife got a penalty for this at IMLP a few years ago, had her number on her back during the bike and didn’t realize it had gotten crumpled over itself somehow.

I crumple it up. Stops the “flapping” that was mentioned above and makes it pliable so moves better with you. As for a number creating “drag” on the back…i’m not sure it would be that much and since everyopne has to wear the number, no real disadvantage.

Doh! IM Cal (HIM) was my first NAS/IM brand race, I’d never had to wear a number on the bike before. So I left T1… forgetting the number. Was going to wear a race belt, but just plain forgot. I stopped at the first official I saw (200 yds out of T1), told them I forgot the number, asked to get back in. Guy looked at my bike, said the bike was marked, I was OK. I got his name in case, and was passed a number of times by the officials, but no one said a word. Perhaps because htey realized penalizing me two minutes would pretty much be irrelevant
