IMs and Discs - again

Any opinions on whether the harsh ride from a 5hr IM bike on the disc is detrimental to your run performance in the marathon. Have discussed this with a few other IMers who report less fatigue with a deep section versus a disc that enables a stronger/ more comfortable run?(solid disc like a zipp 900)

What about using one of the non-solid Hed Jet discs? Wouldn’t that solve the problem… if there is one?

Yip, it would, but IM Austria is this weekend and I have a Zipp 808 with a dodgy tub on it or a Zipp 900 disc. had planned on the 808 but don’t want to reglue now so wondering would the slightly harsher ride of 900 disc have an adverse affect on my run.

  1. you can always use a disc cover or hed jet disc if you really think there is anything to this concept

  2. if you use good tires, tubes, and proper tire pressures its unlikely there is anything to this

As demonstrated from most of my posts I’m a clueless capper so I’m really wondering if you think there is anything to this concept.

I run Conti Competitions so thats out with the good tyres. What about “proper tire pressure”?

I don’t ever bike 100 miles then try to run so I can’t say I have any evidence either way. Do YOU notice the disc pounding you more?

proper tire pressures - how much do you weight?

For a 170pound person thats aroundd 110psi

people who do the whole 130-160psi thing are slowing themselves down and making the ride harsher

Longest I have ridden it is 66 miles :frowning:

I weigh 150-153lbs - so 100psi? Seems low?

it does seem low
but thats going to be about the fastest psi for you and be comfy!
and if you have to guess, being a bit too low is faster than being a bit too high (just based on how pressure affects rolling resistance)

I always thought higher presssure meant lower rolling resistance?

I always thought higher presssure meant lower rolling resistance?

optimal tire pressurs= optimal rolling resistance

our slowtwitch pro jonnyo prefers the feel of a spoked wheel over a solid disc.

And how do you determine optimal tyre pressure?

there are different graphs if you search the forum by users andrew coggan and AFM.

since i use michelin pro race 3s, i follow their weight & pressure chart on their site.

Did I read everything right? You’ve got an IM this coming weekend, you haven’t ridden longer than 66 miles, and you’re worried about whether a disc is going to beat you up?

Maybe I don’t have the full story… but from this thread, I’d say run whatever makes you happy, because I think the wheel will be the smallest contributor to your suffering.

 No I’ve not ridden the disc for more than 66 miles.

I’m in reasonable shape - should hold 220-230 watts average on the bike and run okay off it.

can you post a pic of your set up and position?

What FRAME do you use? And what saddle? You have to consider all the areas where vertical compliance is influenced.

Not right now as I don’t have one to hand but I can tell you:

  • Saddle to armrest drop is not huge. For various reasons I never got around to dropping it gradually over the last few months, so I have two spacers under the stem on my P2c
  • Shoulder and elbow angles are close to the Slowtwitch approved and the hip angle is open.
  • Ski bends rather than my S-bends as I find them a little more comfortable for longer distances and I’m more inclinced to push too hard with S-bends on.
  • Narrow enough with the armrests, as much as I can be and still get my SRM PCV on the bars

2008 Cervelo P2c with stock saddle.

Always found the frame comfortable and the saddle (when i don’t have saddle sores) comfy.

Won’t have a proper chamois as will ride in tri shorts and speedos.

Edit: I am used to getting the knackers knocked off me on Irish roads (imagine riding on a giant badly constructed cheesegrater)

It’s a tough call. I can definitely relate that a 900disc is really stiff vertically, which is why I LOVE the Sub9 and 900clincher disc - the bulge design offers a significant improvement in vertical compliance. But I think Austria is on roads that are basically as smooth as glass (from reports). So that’d mitigate it. Lower tire pressure than most people run will help a LOT, especially with tubulars where pinching isn’t (as much) of an issue.

It also depends on what you have to ride in the back. If you have an 808, for example, that’s a tougher choice than if it’s a box rim.
