Impossible? bar end shifters and STI or 1/2 STI?

I presume this is not possible, but thought I should check with the experts.

STI shifters&brakes. Is it possible to do like you do with brakes and have both regular brakes levers and suicide brake levers, parallel to the bar?

So can you have both STI shifters and bar end shifters?

Or, can you have bar end shifters and STI brakes?

I presume the answers are no way, but again thought I would check.

Now that would be somewhat complex…
Or, can you have bar end shifters and STI brakes? Absolutely…very easy, just don’t run a shift cable.

How would an “STI brake” function any differently from a standard brake?

A brake is a brake, no? Whether the lever is STI or Profile or Tektro (or any other brand) doesn’t matter - it still functions as a brake.

Lots of people run bar end shifters with STI brakes and yes you can run STI shifter/brakes with the suicide brake levers.

I presume this is not possible, but thought I should check with the experts.

suicide brake levers are just extensions that push down the main levers. it’d be hard to do that with shifters -although you could try to do some sort of wile e coyote kinda deal, with pulleys and strings. just don’t count on it working all the time. (same goes for the suicide levers, btw, hence the name). oh, and i don’t think that they sell anything like this in stores.

bar end shifters and “sti” brakes is easy, although there’s nothing sti about them anymore. and you’re throwing away a bunch of money if you paid for sti and aren’t using it. easiest thing to do would be to get an old pair of normal brakes. what you’re talking about is a lot like an old set up with downtube shifters, just that the shifters are now on the bar ends.

then there’s my dream of building up a rear wheel for a tri bike off an old 3-speed hub. then you could put the 3-speed shifter on the bar end and keep the sti on the drops. not very feasible , of course.

EDIT: I think I misunderstood your original post; I thought you wanted to have a way to use the suicide brake model to put extensions onto the shifters. my bad.

I think he actually means interrupter brake levers - cyclocross style.

I don’t care about the brake levers, I have both now.

The real question is about shifters:

  1. can I have functional dual shifters?

  2. if no, can I have bar end shifters and dual brakes?

Sorry if originally this was confusing.

Hey you should check out:

I think that solves your problem. I know people who have used their products before and have no problems.

On my old TT bike I used a STI for the rear cluster and a bar-end for the front, it worked great with the Deda Aeroblue TT bars because they curl up a lot where you mount the brake levers. I think profile makes an adaptor to use both at the same time.

Thanks, that looks like it would do the job. Strnage to have installation instructions of “installation will most often require use of additional cable housing, new shift cables, and cable housing end caps”

I would expect they should specify:

  1. recommended new cable housing for shimano
  2. recommended new shift cables.

Looks like there might be 2 dealers in CO.

Very interesting, thanks again for the lead.
