Immigration now a Canadian Political issue

Trudeau going full Trump and slashing immigration because they use too many resources

The leader of the People’s Party (Max Bernier) has been saying this since 2018 while all the parties ignored him and accused him of being racist and extreme. Now the Conservatives and Liberals are jumping on the band wagon because the polls are showing it is becoming a significant concern for voters.

Of course they will ignore the fact that they didn’t do anything about the out of control immigration (mainly due to “temporary” foreign workers and students who use the loose requirements to stay after their “temporary” jobs are done or they graduate).

Meanwhile, we have 6 million Canadians without a family doctor (I’ve been on a waiting list for 5 years), out of control housing prices and people have lost patience.

Trudeau will lose the next election with a majority Conservative but I don’t think things will change as long as the main parties govern by polls instead of policy.

I understand your continued need for hyperbole. But c’mon man, full Trump? Trump-lite or trump-like would fit better. The article in today’s paper did not address visa overstays, anything about illegal status, or intentions on deportation. Cost and inconvenience to maintain current numbers outweighed the labor and tax receipt benefit. Looking for the sweet spot as opposed to closing the door.

I thought immigration has been a big issue in Canada for a while. It has also been a big issue in most of Europe. The only developed countries that don’t have immigration as one of the top political issues are Japan and Korea. They have had very restrictive immigration and their political issue is birth rates and declining population in place of immigration.

Probably the last year or two only that the majority of Canadians now don’t express unabashed support of high levels of immigration. I think you are right immigration is a big issue pretty well everywhere in Western countries.

He’s not going full trump. But, he is trying to pat himself on the back for slightly correcting a massive problem that he created.

He is going to get absolutely trounced at the next election and no amount of back pedaling can save him now.

It’s interesting looking in to the motivations and pressures behind our insane mass immigration policy. It’s certainly not good for most Canadians.

I would also add that this isn’t just becoming an issue “now”. This has been at the forefront of Canadian discussion for years as it ties in to housing, jobs, healthcare etc.

A friend of mine does all the paperwork for people our church has been sponsoring for the last decade or so. Zomi people from Burma. They are persecuted in Burma so they flee to Malaysia. Then apply to be refugees in Canada. Doing it legally is a ton of work. One of the guys just married a Malaysian girl he met as a refugee. He is Canadian citizen. He married her in a ceremony in Indonesia. It will take at least a year for her to immigrate her through legal means. Maybe more now.

I was in Toronto this week and Vancouver a few months ago. The economies in those places are completely distorted, especially Vancouver. Economists will be studying it for years.

I live in Victoria and it’s a very similar to Vancouver. Possibly worse as wages are lower here.

I think some people here might find my commentary on Canada a bit alarmist or hyperbolic but it really is getting pretty bad.

I have a rental property here and whenever I list it I get a few hundred applicants within hours, most of whom are from, or still in, India. Same when I post a job opening.

It’s crazy to think some people are arguing this isn’t putting pressure on the housing and job market.

I have nothing against immigrants seeking a better life but our immigration policy is completely nuts.

Yup. I used to question it but now it is clear that it is completely out of control. I have some good friends up there who often are hiring people. The wages are shocking low compared to the housing costs. Not surprised that Vancouver is ranked 3rd in the world. Worse than LA, San Francisco, San Jose, San Diego. Of course it is not just housing, there is massive competition for all resources.

Very off topic, but with rental properties and housing being so scarce, do you find that renters treat your property better to ensure they can stay? I have heard and experienced so many rental horror stories.

It’s worse because our provincial NDP has handed developers a monopoly on the housing rental market by gutting property rights from individual owners.

It is nearly impossible to evict someone for cause. The penalty for evicting a tenant for any reason is substantial. We are talking tens of thousands of dollars. Even if the tenant damages your property, you are legally required to return their damage deposit now and fight them in court to recoup your damages.

Tenants know all this and DGAF anymore. It’s brutal.

Is being a landlord worth the hassle for you?
I rented for a long time. I never understood why you would wreck the house you are living in…

It’s becoming more risk and less reward, unless you have a substantial amount of units where a bad tenant or two doesn’t put you under. That’s what I meant by giving corporate landlords a monopoly. The government is really disincentivizing small landlords.

It’s often not trashing the place but not maintaining it or informing LL of small problems that grow in to big issues etc. A tenant of mine ruined some new appliances through neglect that were $4k to replace. They moved back to Ontario and it was impossible to hold them accountable. That sort of thing.

I married a Filipina I met while living in the Philippines. I was finished a bicycle tour and had to come back to Canada as I couldn’t bring a bride home as I was deemed non-resident for tax. I had to work for 2 years to be able to bring her to Canada.

There are thousands claiming refugee status due to persecution, students faking going to school hundreds of thousands of temporary workers who come and then stay after their contract.

There are also documented cases where people from China leave there, and in between China and here “lose” their ID and then claim refugee status here.

Our entire immigration system needs to be looked at.

I wonder how they will handle all the U.S. celebrities that say they will move to Canada is Trump wins…

We will build a wall!

And the US will pay for it

Don’t forget the 50000 or so Lebanese Canadians. Come to Canada, get citizenship. You don’t even have to be here for those 3 years. Go back to your war zone country, contribute nothing to Canada. Trouble brewing? Just demand Canada to evacuate you. After all, Trudeau said that a Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian with all the rights, freedoms and entitlements. Responsibility is a dirty and racist word.
