IMLP - Crash on Keene decent

I suppose we’ve covered almost all topics from the 2009 IMLP by now, sorry to continue the threads.

However, what the hell happened on the decent to Keene on the second loop (maybe 11:20-11:30AM race time)??? As I went by there was someone laid completely out and bike gone, with ambulances rushing up the hill and Ironman Support vehicles already on scene. Seemed to be very similar in nature to the crash in the TDF this year. It was 3/4 of the way down on what appeared to be a very straight section, however the wind was howling and tossing things around quite violently. I truly hope he/she is okay but it looked bad, very bad.

Anyone know?

I don’t know what happened, but I did ride by and see him. When I went by there were two other cyclists with him, but no support vehicles. I just remember noticing that he had gone down on the steepest, fastest part of the course and I really, really hope that he has no permanent damage. Saw the ambulance headed back up towards him as I made my way down.

If it’s the guy I’m thinking about (P2 Carbon??). He’s from the Rochester, NY area and I heard that he’s relatively fine with only a broken collar bone. Haven’t heard the full details on how he went down though.

He must have just crashed when I was descending…He was layed out in th middle of the road, one racer stoped next to him almost blocking the entire right hand lane. I had to swing out into the other lane to avoid them…was kinda freaky considering it was the fastest section on the decent, I hit 54mph, additionally the wind was quite blustery and with a disc I had a couple of white knuckle moments. I saw the ambulance on there way up the hill form Keene.
I asked around after the race and heard that hes was okay…bad concussion road rash etc. but heard nothing about any broken bones.
hope he is okay but a terrible thing to happen particularly in a race!

Some years ago - three really. I was at 60mph + and a guy shot past me. He went head on into a parked ambulance that was on the left side of the road after a wobble…wonder what happened to him

umm? dead?

60+ mph into a fixed object and the outcomes tend not to be good.

This is in a race? Placid? I don’t think you can get 60+ on that descent. I’m a big horse, and in a tuck have maxed at 54 there. Only once in my life have I exceeded 60 on a bike and it requires a good, straight, and reasonably long high teens percent grade.

I would agree. I’m also a bigger guy, with little fear decscending, and the best I have done is 56 and believe me I have tried very hard to reach 60.

I know the guy who stopped to help. His name is Bobn Stocks. This is the second time he has stopped during a race to help a fellow athlete following a crash on the bike. He spent 10min with this person before the paramedics showed up and could care less about his time. A true class act.

Yes it is hard to hit 60…i rode that hill, both ways, 2-3 times a weeks for several years…my top speed ever on is 56mph…I am 148-50 race day…but honestly dont think weight has a ton to do with it. Having been a DH ski racer for my entire life that descent does not bother me and I am always looking for speed on it. A training buddy of mine, who is a pure cyclist, has hit 60 for about 2 secs…with a tail wind…he tips the scale on a fat day at 145.

Class Act you’re right. Bob also sent an email to our local tri club trying to get a follow up on how he was doing. Said he spent time with the unconscious person until the paramedics arrived. Wow! It’s good to know there are people like that in our sport.

The jaded person I am I pictured in my mind a stream of bikes flying past pissed because they had to tap their brakes for a second…

Not to mention he did the exact same thing at E-Man just last month when a woman had bit it hard.

And tons of a-holes just rode right by her without even stopping to remotely see if she was okay.

Bob epitomizes what is right about the sport.

Sounds like a lot of those A-Holes are right here…

Well honestly …whats the point of three people standing around someone on the road when they have now knowledge of how to help them?

Hmm…to my mind, Bob kinda sounds like a jinx…

I rode past a recent crash on the back stretch between Keene and Upper Jay (about 3 miles out of Keene) On the first loop. Looked like two bikes got together. A man was sitting on the pavement dazed while what appeared to be a women lay on her back her face severely bloodied. A race support motorcyclist was cradling her head in his hands. I could not get this sight out of my mind. I could not imagine riding past her if she lie alone!

LMAO! I was thinking the same thing. Seriously though. I can understand not stopping when there is help on the scene but in my mind there is no excuse for riding by the guy on the Keene descent as he was laying lifeless in the middle of the road as the 3 or 4 riders did before me.

I do hope you were kidding about the jinx.

Yes, totally joking - it just struck me as funny that people kept adding more instances of crashes right near him where he stopped to help. He sounds like an awesome guy - there is NO race or ride or whatever that’s so important that people should just ride on by when someone needs help. Obviously not if there’s help already there, but otherwise? Stop, for god’s sake. I mean, there shouldn’t even be any question or thought about that.

For the record, Travis came to before I got to him. He was definitely dazed and not doing well. A rider who was riding up the hill and called 911 actually stayed with him until the EMT’s arrived. The other rider that stopped after I did was a physician and we both left when the woman said she would stay with Travis.

Well, it wouldn’t surprise me if there is some prior history of athletes acting badly around an accident like this - I found a rule for it…

**5.6 Accidents. **All participants shall exercise extreme caution and shall decrease speed if necessary in passing the site of any cycling accident. Any violation of this section shall result in disqualification.

I was the dazed guy sitting on the pavement. I was passing on the left when some guy dropped something then suddenly jammed on his brakes to stop and get it. The women who you saw lying on her back was right behind him and swerved to miss him but instead hit is back wheel and went flying off her bike, across the lane, right in front of me. It happened so fast I couldn’t get out of the way and rode straight in to her. After a few bike repairs from the on course mechanics and some bandages from medical I was able to continue and finish the race.

I don’t think the woman was quite as lucky, I think she was taken away in an ambulance. Does anyone know who she is and if she is OK?
