IMCDA Crash #2

Well Afeth the pain and raod rash has worn off, did anyone see what hapened to me after about 1 mile into the bike? I came out of the swim in about 1:09 and headed out fast on the bike, the guy in front of me went wide on the right hand turn out of town and went wider than he should hanev and clipped my front wheel. Donw I went and so did 9 months of training. HOwever after breaking my speedplay cleats on impact and getting an ass load of road rash I limped home and went drinking with my dad! did anyone see me walking the lonely mile back to the hotel on CDA morning?

That’s unfortunate. I am sorry to hear about what happened to you. That is very unfortunate.

When you get out of the water where you are, it can be just nuts both in transition and the first few miles on the bike. I will be completely honest here and tell you what I have seen having stood on the sidelines at many big IM races - that first few miles on the bike can be very chaotic and many triathletes do not have the best bike handling skills - in fact they are down-right poor. Couple this with the fact that they are kinda out of balance and wobbly legged after the swim AND they have all this stuff mounted high up on the bike throwing off the bikes normal centre of gravity and handling AND you and others may have to dodge ejected bottles from rear mounted cages. Furthermore, many are already in head down, hammering ITT mode and oblivious to the dangers and others around them. This can lead to pure bedlam in the first 5 - 10 K of the bike. Perhaps it’s best to remember at this point that, it’s not about the bike  and ride as defensivly as you can.

Sorry to hear about your bike crash. I also had a bike crash which happened on the second loop at the corner of Rimrock and Lakeview; however, I don’t know if someone cut me off or I was just going too fast into the turn and lost control. All I know is that I was unable to finish the race. My heart goes out to you as I know the feeling of not being able to finish after having trained for so long. I am at Arizona next April and will do CDA again in 2009. I hope to see you there.
