I think I just paid $700.00 for a piece of crap backpack. When did WTC get so chincy?
Thought the same thing at Placid, but being my first I figured the back packs were always like that?
IM France this year mine ripped after 1 hour no joke

Backpack? Up to a couple years ago, all we got were sling bags

Last year, they were nice backpacks…got one from IMSG and one from IMMOO. I think they decided they could make more money by giving you a crappy one and selling the nice ones in the IM Store (which is what they’ve done.) Pretty lame.

I actually like my 2012 O’side sling backpack bag…It’s the perfect size.
I gave this years O’side and StG sling bags to my twin nieces, thought they were pretty cool…lol
At least in my case, after a few races the logo and “stuff” no longer matter. However, since we are there, I agree last years BP was nicer. I don’t want WTC to get the idea that I will buy a nicer back pack just for the logo.
You can have mine if your’s rips. Before I went through check in I was trying to figure out why so many people had bought garish look at me backpacks. But then I’ve also never been able to figure out when you’d ever wear all the finisher gear I see people buying the day after.
I wonder if I gave it back if they’d give me the $7.99 it cost them.

I thought you paid $700 to do a race where you get novelty items like cheap backpacks…I am absolutely amazed at people who complain about the swag they get at high priced events when the money they spent in training, travel and accommodation for that event far exceeds the entry fee and the cost of a bloody backpack.
Oh and can we expect a flood of anti IMAZ threads from you in the coming few days or are you just about done?
The ones from last year are a little garish but they are sturdy. Can haul half a case of wine and 12 cans of beer no problem.
I have to say, I love my IMUK finisher’s jacket, mostly since it’s waterproof, warm, well designed and relatively subtle (Black, IM logo over the left breast, ‘Finisher’ in a wreath on the right arm, and the distances in a slightly different finish of black on the bottom of the back, almost invisible). More kit like this would be great.
Some of the North American finisher kit I’ve seen makes my eyes burn.

I agree with this statement to an extent. I did pay the $650 to do IMFL for the race itself and not the “swag” (I hate that word). However I don’t think it was a good idea on WTC’s part to give out pretty nice packs at last years events then give out the garbage they did this year. IMFL was my first full distance race and I got the race experience I expected, but I’ve received better shirts at local 5k’s. Hats, backpacks, finishers shirts are all garbage. As I said I have little experience with WTC but they didn’t seem to make the gear race specific at all. It all looks the same. Even most of the finishers stuff in the shop day after. Sad to see someone that’s already so profitable cut corners at the consumers expense, but such is life.
I’m looking at Rev3 Cedar Point for my next full. Glad to see Rev3 and Challenge step up with full distance races. If they can get volunteers like I experienced at IMFL I’d have no problem paying to do one of their races. I was leery of doing a “small town” full after seeing HITS Ocala having basically empty aid stations.

It’s amazing. People complain about the quality of the backpacks and then bitch about the entry fees. If you want quality swag, you’re going to pay for it.
Personally, I wish they’d stop giving us crap. I just want to race. If they really want to give us something, I’d rather get a credit to use at the Ironman store. I don’t need another backpack or sling back or hat or whatever.
I agree. I have last years IMAZ backpack and now this years. Last years was great, my kid uses it for all his lacrosse gear. This year they are cheap, but they are better than the 50 gear bags that I have around the house.
Nobody likes to see a fall in quality, whether its the race or a goody bag, and see the price go up. Fortunately, IM still provides a high quality race experience. I could do without the goody bag.

I have to say that the difference from last years IMMOO back pack to the one I got this year is night and day! Last years bag was really nice and pretty tough, I use it all the time and its holding up well, This years bag I’m afraid to use, seems like it just begging to tear open 10 minutes after I stuff some gear into it. I too would rather have a credit to the IM store. I love the beer glasses and coffee mugs. I have them at my cabin in the WI northwoods, great conversation starters for my woodsy friends.
They don’t even make it race specific, they are all the same white/grey/orange piping… only difference is the silk screened race name/logo… IMFL backpack I got in 2012 was nice… seems like I lucked out with getting that…
At the 2012 IMC I got precisely nada …… other than some race numbers and transition / special needs bags. Apparently they ran out and I was far from the last one registering.

You have right to be scared to use it. I put my laptop in the main compartment of mine last weekend and the top part ripped. All that was in it was my laptop and charger, not exactly stuffed. I agree give me a $30 credit to the store, or just a pint glass. I’d get more use out of a pint glass.
