IM Transitions

If I am planning on wearing cycling clothes for the bike leg and running clothes for the run lg, what is the fastest legal way for me to change outfits in T2?

From a previous post, you’re doing IM Florida, right? When you come off the bike you are routed into the change “tent” (banquet hall) where your T2 bag is located. Strip off the bike clothes, put on the run clothes, and head out.

IMNA races, and presumably all the others have change tents which you enter, usually after retrieving your T2 bag from the rack or having it handed to you by a volunteer. There’s no need to think about trying to change in the open because the tent is basically part of your route to the run exit. You’re not likely to be in all that much of a hurry at that point anyway. You might even consider sitting down to put your shoes on.

But what about being naked transitioning from bike clothes to run clothes?

And? the problem is what?

The tents are gender specific. One male tent, one female tent. If you have problems being naked in front of folks of your own gender, then you should have a towel in your bag. Wrap towel around bottom, change. Put towel back in bag.

you were born naked…sorry, i couldnt resist

I don’t care about bering naked…I am more worried about a DQ…I am wondering if it is legal to literally just drop my cycling shorts in order to put the running ones on? I recall reading somewhere that you are not allowed to be publicly naked.

yeah there is a rule against public nudity so no changing in the general transition area, but that’s why they have the tent in transition, it’s basically there so you can sit down if needed to, change, put sunscreen on and do whatever you need to do. There is generally a tent both at T1 and at T2 for most IM distance races. Well maybe not always at T1 but it’s there fairly often.

Nuding up in the tents is no problem. The rule you refer to applies to outdoor transition racks in public view, typical of shorter races. In that case you’d need to wrap a towel around yourself or hop into a portapotty.
At Ironman, they know many people are going to want to change clothes completely at least once and often twice, hence the two large tents (or in the case of Florida, large rooms) which are essentially male and female locker rooms.

thanks…very helpful
