I completed IMWI this year and I’d like to hop on the commemorative tattoo bandwagon, but all the research I’ve done shows men with IM tattoos. I don’t think I’d look very good with a calf tattoo, and I think the MDot logo is a little bold for me, especially filled in with red!
Do any women out there have an IM tattoo? Did you get the MDot or 140.6? Where is your tattoo?
I don’t have an M-dot tattoo (have done 2), but do have a reasonably large tat on my R calf. Yeah there are times I think it’s a bit much (esp if wearing a suit or dress and non-opaque tights) but I also like how it looks and the feeling I feel when passing someone on the run and them seeing it (“dammit! it’s that shark lady again! grrr!”).
I personally wouldn’t get an M-dot tat, but that’s me. If I get another one (have 2 now) it’ll be a maple leaf maybe on my shoulder.
My wife got the tattoo done on the top of her foot. That foot happened to get pretty messed up during her race. I call it her IronFoot
Edit:
BTW. . .half the people in the other thread who are hiding behind screen-names probably have one themselves; they just don’t want the “cool kids” laughing at them. Skinny guys in spandex making fun of people getting tattoos. . .hilarious.
I have a smal pink M-Dot on my inner ankle right behind the ankle bone. It’s light and fairly subtle as far as tattoos go. You could do a light color m-dot with no border.
I’m actually in the process of getting it lasered off as I want to be tattoo free.
Thanks! a really superb local tri (there’s a sprint and a half-IM) customizes your spot in transition. One year it was “Go make Fiona and Cherry (the names of my pets) proud.” Another year it was “Go make Rochester (where I live) proud.” This year it was a motivational phrase or personal mantra! Really great race!
I responded in the other room. I stand by my tattoos, I have 4 & they all mean something to me. I have friends that insist they don’t have to mean something but they all do to me. I don’t look at my tattoos every day (2 on my back, one ankle & the tri one on my leg) but they are part of what I consider my “definitions” for myself. Yeah, it’s cheesy, but I like them to have meaning & be part of my story.
I survived a hellish iron-distance race with really remarkable weather & course. It marked the moment that I considered myself fully “back” from being drugged, assaulted & raped on my birthday. That tattoo is a visual reminder that I can survive & conquer anything I want to with my own strength. I have doubts, I look at my leg & plow ahead. Yeah, it’s still cheesy but sometimes you need that actual, physical reminder of where we’ve been & what we’re capable of, becuase there’s sure as hell enough people in the world more than willing to let us forget.
Just my $.02. Do what you want. Live your life your way & don’t make excuses or take them from others.
First of all I think theres nothing wrong with an Mdot tattoo but I have a 140.6 on my calf from 2004 Caliman and I HATE IT! If you get one be ready to answer the question a million times, I’ve told most people its a radio station and they actually beleive me. I still may get rid of it somehow, its on the back of my calf.
I’ve got an m-dot by my ankle bone on the outside of my right ankle.
I’ve never hidden the fact that I have it from the tools in the other forum. As soon as they actually finish an Ironman they’ll want one. They are a very small segment of triathletes.
I have a total of 3 tatts and love them all for different reasons. I’m deciding on my next one. I think it will be a buttercup because I’m always telling myself and my friends to “toughen up, buttercup!”
All my tatts can be hidden with clothing but I don’t generally worry about it unless on a job interview.
Honestly, I just don’t get the tattoo thing. You’re stuck with them for life and when the skin ages and sags so does the tattoo. I’m glad my wife feels the same and she never wanted one after doing her IM. But to each their own.
I used to have a 140.6 sticker on my car. I would tell people it was how much I weigh.
Back to the original question though, I think M-dots are fine. Finishing an iron distance race no matter how long it takes is a major accomplishment. If someone wants to commermorate with some ink, more power to them!
