IM Tahoe Cancelled

Sucks but totally expected!! Proud to have raced both years!

After careful consideration, IRONMAN Lake Tahoe will not be continued. We appreciate the efforts and support of the city, volunteers, sponsors, and everyone else involved in putting on this triathlon over the past eight years. We would also like to thank all of the athletes who have raced with us in Lake Tahoe.
We appreciate your dedication and understand your disappointment with not being able to race in Lake Tahoe. Please consider one of the following IRONMAN events:

sad
.

Yep sad. Did the 70.3 and it was amazing

very sad. such a great course. awesome volunteers too!

Eight years?

That is how long the planning and permitting took to pull it off.

Eight years?

So disappointing. I love IM races, but there are enough that are pretty much the same. It was great to have one that was so special, so different. I never got to race it, but was out there 8 days last year excited to race and it was one of my best experiences at an IM.

Eh, I want to hate on WTC for bailing on a great race but honestly it doesn’t really have any further impact on my already negative opinion of them nor can I necessarily blame a for-profit corporate entity for making decisions purely on finical lines. Regrettably, I can’t even blame our new Chinese overlords since this decision appeared to be all but set in stone well in advance of their involvement.

Not unexpected but still sucks. Raced the full in 2013 and the half last Sunday. Super hard and super fun.

Same here. Argggg…

When they were selling some IMLT merchandise at Saturday’s expo at a 20% discount, that was a pretty good indication these WTC people were shutting it down. They aren’t the type to leave even a couple bucks on the table.

Have we reached the peak?

I figured this was going to happen. I was one of the lucky ones who finished the race in 2013. After the 2014 cancellation, and the obvious weather-related challenges of the 2013 race I knew this one wasn’t going to be around long. Everything I heard says the race went off perfectly on Sunday (I wasn’t there this time). Sad to see it go.

That’s too bad. The hardest 70.3 I’ve ever done, but the most beautiful and so memorable. It was a great race to bring a family to as well.

Bummer. It was an epic event. I’ll add it to Ironman Utah (2002) and Ironman St. George as the 3rd Ironman I won’t be able to go back to.

Well, maybe now the local race IM Tahoe killed will be back. Expedition Man (on the Nevada side) was on for two years but after IM announced IMLT the thing died. Great 140.6 race for $300 registration. Hopefully they bring it back.

Did they ever give a reason as to why they cancelled IM Utah (2002)?

Two deaths in the race and a poor venue from the get go. Utah Lake is shallow and prone to excessive chop as it is generally quite windy there.

not a good idea to put a ironman at a 7000 feet + venue. Too many problem can occure…

These decisions don’t have to be permanent. The old local races can come back with their former sponsors, other new ones can pop up, or WTC could even bring them back as well.

I guess a venue has to be successful on a huge scale for the (McDonald’s, Apple, Walmart, Insert your brand name here) of triathlon to be profitable enough to keep the door open. Economies of scale and such. Smaller race companies with less need for huge profit or just a love of putting races on fill the gaps.
