IM New Zealand šŸ‡³šŸ‡æ underway

Surely the swim was short then?
Here are Thorsten’s results:
https://www.trirating.com/ironman-new-zealand-2025-analyzing-results/

He has a manual input on his Strava of 3,800m and the new course record at 43’16". 1’09"/100m sounds about right for him. Only other strava I could see was 3,757m so fairly accurate.

Nice hit out for Skipper, know he is relieved to have his Nice spot locked up. Now he can plan his season around that.

Assuming a wetsuit swim, 43+ is right where a guy that swims 45+ in Kona should be. Was it wetsuit legal??

TVB put out a sub 8 at age 41. That’s amazing.

Fair enough.
Top three of all time are Sibberson (IM Frankfurt), McKensie (IM Brazil), Stratmann (IM Portugal), all in the 42s.

Yes, and the lake was also very calm compared to what I saw in a past race.

I’m not doing a good job of tracking this rolldown, but at least 2 of the women’s AGs so far have opened to ā€œany finisherā€.

Looks like 3 spots had no takers and recycled back to other AGs.

But I thought it was Nice that didn’t appeal to women :man_facepalming:

Men’s groups were rolling deep also, a lot is just location but also IM has the registration cost at US $1650 (Kona) or 1460 euros (Nice) :grimacing:

So I’ve been wondering about Cairns, Texas, or Taupo for my Kona qualifying plans in the future. Still havent decided, but its interesting that there are less takers in NZ. I figured it would attract anyone in the Pacific looking for a slot. Maybe this is just an aberration because so many ā€œlocalsā€ from the Pacific area just raced there at Worlds so less slot seekers came back?

Possibly. But also keep in mind it means training through their winter.

Of course if you’re in the northern U.S. you may have the same problem training for Taupo.

Edit: I originally thought there would be more takers just because this is one of the earliest races for the calendar year. So I was surprised at rolldown.

Why do they charge so much more for a world champs? Other than ā€˜because they can’ is there any other justification, a nicer bag, towel and medal…?

.
The outrageous cost of going to Hawaii with Aussie and Kiwi dollars is what is stopping people.

I really don’t understand this line of reasoning. New Zealand in particular is more expensive than Europe (bar maybe Switzerland and Norway) and the trip to Hawaii costs a fraction of what it costs to travel from Europe… plus isn’t accommodation cheaper if you book in March?

Right now the Kiwi dollar is worth $0.56 USD so that means the entry alone is just under $3K Kiwi dollars . That is just stupid!

In Aussie dollars it is around $2,650…Equally stupid.

I could enter Laguna Phuket Tri,fly to Thailand for the race from Oz and stay a week in a nice hotel for less than just the entry fee to Kona.

Oh I know. All the Kona diehards just wanted to make it seem like IM couldn’t fill up the Nice race because it didn’t have the same appeal.

Does anyone know what bike Joe is privateering? I thought there was discussion about him no longer being on the Argon, but is that the case?

Clearly posted about his Argon bike three days ago on Instagram
