IM Louisville- bike shoes not allowed to be clipped in?

In the athlete info guide it states “You are not allowed to clip your shoes into your bike pedals race morning or leave your helmet on your bike race morning”. For those that have done this race in the past is this something new this year? I’m guessing I’ll have to run with my shoes in hand till I reach my bike and then put them on and hop on the bike.

Or has this always been there and just not followed? I don’t see what the big deal is about leaving your shoes clipped in.

Same rule for IMLP about six years ago. The big deal is many who try to leave them on fall or cause others to fall.

Styrrell

This is how it was last year and is enforced. You can leave your shoes on the bike when you come back after the ride but to start they have to be in your transition bag so it is best to just put them on in the transition tent.

The shoe part I get. The helmet part I don’t. What am I missing?

“What am I missing?”

Transition areas are really tight and crowded…helmets and other debris were getting dropped, knocked, etc causing confusion and hazards. Makes perfect sense with the masses.

Ok, so you are suppose to carry a backpack on your back during the swim with your shoes and helmet in it?

what the heck does that mean? You don’t use transition areas?

The transition area is considered “clean”, as in no gear is allowed by the bikes. All changing is done in the tent. They have transition bags for T1 and T2 that you pick up, change in the tent, and then go out. Shoes and helmet go into the T1 bag. They’re big bags, it’ll fit. My TT2 helmet fit fine last year. Exiting T1 tends to be crowded, so they likely have the no shoes on bike because people will inevitably fall or just have trouble getting into them. The bike was rather crowded until the first noticeable hill about 10-11 miles in. I didn’t feel like there was much breathing room until after the out & back on 1694. The hills there tend to separate people. Put the shoes on in the tent and run in them, or carry them to the bike. Shouldn’t be a big deal.

You use a swim-to-bike transition bag. All the North American IMs have been this way for years. The only thing at the bike rack is your bike.

The Pros do not have to do this. There stuff is right there on the bike. Not fair!

That is a good plan. Be sure to step to the side and put you shoes on. Many people will be trying to hop and their bikes, falling all over the place, with their helmets on backwards. Not to mention watter bottles falling all over the place. I looks looks like a WWE battle royal (and is the BEST place to spectate!).

I will edit this since you have not done an Ironman transition before.

This is the process:

  • Get out from the swim
  • Run to racks to get your T1 bag (containing helmet, shoes, and whatever else you want.)
  • Run into Transition tent where there are about 50 or so chairs
  • Sit on chairs and put everything on with the assistance of volunteers
  • Get out of tent and run to your bike (which should only have the bottles)
  • Get out of Transition area and get on the bike.

Take care that your feet don’t get stepped on in the run out by someone wearing shoes. Ouch! Cleats can carve out a pretty big piece of meat.

Have not done a full IM yet. Thanks!! The one I have been to DID allow helmet on Aerobars and shoes to be clipped in. Seriously

The Pros do not have to do this. There stuff is right there on the bike. Not fair!

Pros = helmet + shoes + shades (doable in less than 30 seconds).

Schmozes = helmet + shoes + shades + compression socks + gloves + gels on pockets + powerbar + extra bottle + chamois cream (all too much to put on beside the bike so to avoid the chaos, we are all required to do this in the tent where volunteers can assist.)

.

There might still be a few of those that allow them but that would probably have been more of an exception…

.

Oceanside still allows as does IM 70.3 Orlando.

Always good for a laugh!

All of those are 70.3’s. WTC full IM races have a different set of rules.

Did not know that. Sorry!
