3500 applicants from the USA…150 slots… 4% chance of “winning”
obviously, i didn’t win (this year)…
good luck to all.

I did not get in, however I am gladd that I donated $35 to the IM corporation bottom line. I am proud.
Shit.
Nope. ![]()
I scanned down the last names… Someone with the same last name as me got in. For a split second I thought I was in! Oh well…

I know about 7 people who got in (I think–since they didn’t include cities or states).

My husband did; Rob Mardell of Santa Clara Cal. At present he is still orbiting up around the ceiling somewhere, not sure when he’ll come back down. He is signed up for Wisconsin, but we’re thinking of backing out on that in favor of Hawaii only a month later, for cost reasons as well as for him to be physically ready. He can confirm his slot at Vineman Half, so that shouldn’t be a problem.
My wife got in! She also hit the Canada lottery. We both get to do Canada. Now we can hear the debate about the lottery. She has done 7 Ironman distance races and is raising a 2 and 4 year old - she desrves it. We planned our vacation to do Keahou this year and spend a few days in HI and now I get to go twice! I’m going to be broke from this sport! Off to Boston for the marathon - she qualified - I didn’t.
nope, but a friend of mine was fortunate enough to get in.
i am however a little more bitter now about bachelor ryan getting a free pass for this. maybe not quite so much if it was trista instead.
i agree with a previous thread in that it would be nice if the field was expanded, or if there was a system in place, somewhat in the mold with entering the nyc marathon, so that triathletes with previous dedication and longevity in the sport have a more certain chance to eventually race in kona. not for one and done types of races.
To Summitt: I have a 3 and 6 year old and work (“part-time” lawyer, which means 8:30-5 every day). I have a pretty hard time maintaining a regular workout schedule and I’m only training for Oly distance. How does your wife manage to get the hours in for the IM (major congrats, BTW)?
Woof.
I saw this posting, and forgot that I had submitted my name some moons ago. That was months before I committed to going to medical school, made plans to use my last freetime this summer to travel in Africa, and all around drop training post Wildflower.
Hmmm. I’m on the list. What to do, what to do…

No,and I just knew I was getting in this year. For the last two years I’ve shared a residence between California and Rhode Island. I even file taxes from Rhode Island. So last year I noticed no one from R.I. was on the HIM entry list. I remember reading that the lottery tries to pick at least two people from each state. I guess R.I. had 3 people in the lottery this year and I was the odd person out?

There’s a shocker. Who don’t you know, Cathy?
Yep, I got in. I still can’t believe it. I started jumping up and down at work and everyone thought I went crazy. I keep checking the list to be make sure I’m not hallucinating.
I have no idea how I’m getting there yet, but my wife says she’ll “borrow” a raft and row us there if she has to.
This will be my first full Ironman (just finished my first 1/2 at Ralphs CA), and I get to do it at Kona, doesn’t get much better than that.
“doesn’t get much better than that…”
nope, and it doesn’t get any stupider than that either. to have Kona as your first IM is about the worst thing you can do.
they should really make it a rule that lottery people have to have done at least one full IM prior to racing in Kona.
anyone agree?
Timbo
Just shut up already.
Congrats cstetson.
OUCH! hahahahaha
yes, congrats but you must know that it’s pretty stupid to do Kona as you first IM.
Timbo
Sure, Kona is going to be one hell of a tough race without a doubt…but I’m not a triathlete because it’s easy. This will be my fourth tri season, and I’m not talking sprint races. Oly is the shortest I do (and really only because of the high costs assoc. with IM races), and I come from a strong swimming and running background. I hadn’t really planned on racing Kona as my first full IM, but hey, who actually believes they’d win the chance? It’s just not something I can pass up, since the opportunity may never come again. And if individuals in their 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s+ can muster up the strength to finish, then so can I.
Kona was my first IM, it was great. Very slow but great.
Rick
“4% chance of winning”.
Does anyone know if they provide the breakdown on how many people joined the “Passport Club” and entered the lottery? Those of you who got in, did you join that? Seems like it would greatly improve your chances (while those who don’t have a much lower chance).
I joined the Passport Club when I entered the lottery. I figured if I was going to enter, I may as well improve the odds as best I could.
For those who’ve been to Kona, how was it?
