I'm doing the sprint and my wife is

…doing the 1/2 IM in Ottawa this year. It’s her first half and I support her fully for doing it. Just wondering what I’m supposed to do between the time I finish the sprint and she finishes the 1/2.

I know…I know…a good spouse is supposed to stand on the course for many hours to see your significant other pass by a couple of times over the course of the day…

But between then can anybody recommend a good nearby bar or pub in the area.

Yea, I was thinking maybe you should be hanging out at the beer tent. H’mmmm, how many beers could you down by the time your wife finishes…

I’m doing the sprint at the “Canadian”

If you want a view of the bike course assuming we’re biking down colonel by again this year (I havent checked). About 3 km from the turn around at Ottawa U, there is a bar right on Colonel by drive at the pretoria bridge, - its called the Royal Oak. I’m not sure if its open in the morning when we’re racing but they have a patio and a balcony so you can enjoy your stella and watch all the racers…

Just over the pretoria bridge (and down the road a bit is Elgin street) where there are plenty of bars there…take your pick =)

a get together would be great - I’d offer to have a BBQ or something but unfortunately Im still in an apartment…so it would be pretty cramped and uncomfortable…

Royal Oak sounds pretty good with the patio. Don’t want too much to drink after the sprint. Just some lunch and a couple of pints. Thanks for the tip.

Nice to see who wears the pants in this family
.

“What would you guess as far as water temperatures. I know it is a sprint but will people be wearing wetsuits”

Water temp is usually in the low 70’s. It’s also a very short 500m swim in the sprint with 30 kms bike and 5 kms run. Lots wear wetsuits in the sprint, but others don’t. I’m one of the wussies that does.

The course is actually a nice venue since the bike is closed to cars and the run is on the trail along the canal. The bike may be a bit hectic this year since a try-a-tri, duathlon, sprint, 1/2 IM and IM length will be going on at the same time.

I’m either in the Sprint or the Half. Depends on how KTown goes on Sunday. Also have family in the Half and the full.

One year, a group of us hit the beer/LCBO store right after the Sprint and put the drinks in our water bottles. Had a blast cheering everyone on. Made for a fun time at the Sprint award ceremony! (little loud and rowdy we were!)

The course still goes down Colonel By. Same as the past 4-5 years at least.

Lots of participants wear their wetsuits for the Sprint. I don’t as I spend just as much time getting in the damn thing as I do swimming!

Great race!

“Depends on how KTown goes on Sunday”

We’ll be there to. Always enjoy Kingston and usually go the the Prince George or Brew Pub patio for lunch afterwards. Also planning on doing Brockville and Coburg. Brockville is always a lot of fun. It’ll be the first time for Coburg.

Of course Brockville is fun…I’m the RD

Haven’t done Coburg but heard it was good last year.

I’ll be at KTown for the Long Course. Look for the Cranks Bicycle Shoppe jerseys. (hard to miss - very bright orange and blue)

Are you racing or watching KTown?

You can hang around and cheer me on as well, as I’ll be doing the full - I’ll be passing you LOTS of times on the 12 out-and-backs of the bike! I hope to high heaven that the wind isn’t strong out of the west on race day, as that will make each of the returns to Hog’s Back quite tedious.

I did LP last year, and I can’t decide if doing The Canadian this year is going from the sublime to the ridiculous or vice versa. I guess it depends on what in these cases is considered “sublime”, and what is considered “ridiculous”…

The Royal Oak idea is a good one for you, as it would have to be open by late morning at which point your wife will still be on the course (it’s a 9:30 start for the 1/2, yes?). Then you can drive up to Clegg Street and do the very short walk to the run turnaround, sand see her a couple of times there. Sounds like a decent day!

"Are you racing or watching KTown? "

Of course we’ll be racing. Who the heck would actually want to watch a triathlon.

I thought the sprint is starting a bit later this year, so you won’t have to wait around all that long.

There is a whole whack of slowtwitch dudes coming up to do the half Ironman at the Canadian and some are doing the full Iron distance.

I’ll be in the half. It is one of my favourite races, although truthfully, I prefer hilly courses. At least on those you have half the time at 165, the other at 110 bpm. On these flat courses, its a whole half Ironman pegged at 165. That, to me is much harder.

See you folks on labour day weekend. I hope to have my P3 for this race and hopefully I can do it justice.

The sprint starts at 8:20, your wife will start at 9:30, and the Royal Oak at Pretoria Bridge opens at 10. Bust your tail in your race, finish, hop on your bike and join the full and half people on the course as you pedal down to Royal Oak to be the first in line for the best patio seat!

Dev - Who all is coming up to do the full? Somersault doesn’t provide access to its race lists, and all I think I know is that there are about 70 in for the full. Can you name names?

Can’t remember who is doing the full, but some ST’ers sent me emails early in the year. In the half we have Allan Faulds, Trevor Syverson, Stefan Kusurelis, myself and a bunch of local ST guys.
