Not doing it this year but asking for a friend as she is a late IM CA transfer and asking for advice. Seems to come up every year, United has a seasonal luggage embargo and says they won’t accept bikes during this time. And every year the Facebook page explodes
I have always used TBT so no experience, but people have posted here that they were allowed to bring them on United. The unknown adds a bit of unnecessary added stress
Anyone have tips or latest info to help guide her?
It sounds like people are calling United customer service and transferring to flights into Cancun, instead. Less than ideal, as it adds steps and potential risk of ferry cancellation.
I did IM COZ 2017 and flew with United. I had the same freak-out moment when I read about the embargo, but calls into the airline told me differently. They did charge $200 though. I should have just done TBT. That is what I’m doing this year.

Yeah thanks, your post is probably one I saw when I started looking at this for her. TBT is great for Coz, but these are al last minute CA deferrals so sold out
I guess it is to late for TBT, I dropped my bike off at Tri LAB today.
If possible suggest she fly LAX to Dallas (or another) to Cozumel. Not direct to Cancun. I would not want to deal with the drama of negotiating a bike and luggage getting to the ferry.

The issue is that Cozumel (for United not AA or Delta when I looked) is the airport with the checked bag embargo. Cancun is not on the list of destinations with the embargo. Its a seasonal restriction starting 11/15 to 1/15/22 for United. AA has a similar policy but starts 11/27 and does not include Cozumel. Delta has a similar policy but with way fewer destinations, none of which are in Mexico.
I still can’t believe people fly United after that doctor was almost beaten to death. You’d think people would vote with their wallet.
Wow could there be anymore BS in this post about what actually happened. My gosh.
That is precisely what happened. He was the original ticket holder for that seat, they over-booked. They did not even attempt to hit max compensation for overbook situations. And then they went for forceable removal via the airport police arm. Who then definitely beat that man into submission requiring several surgeries.
United overbooked, they needed to get 4 of their people to where-ever they were flying so they could be set for the next shift. They randomly picked 4 people after no one would get off the flight. 3 of them left, he refused to get off the plane. At that point the 3 airport police officers were called since he wouldn’t leave the aircraft and forcibly dragged him out of the plane. United than proceeded after some stupid comments proceeded to settle with him and take full responsibility.
At worst they were just following their normal policy of overbooked flights. The police were really at fault, but also if you’re asked to leave a plane you probably should make the argument off the plane like an adult instead of a screaming child not giving up your seat. Given how often this occurs and there has been what the summation of 1 case(?) where this was actually a problem. It’s really dumb to say it was United who was at fault for his treatment and further more that he was almost beaten to death. Give me a break.
You can definitely make the argument the policy is moronic, but it’s nothing new and if you want to forcefully try to stay in your seat, when they say you have to get off the plane? What did he think was going to happen?
