I'm betting Phelps wins the Charlotte UltraSwim

And always nice to see Sabir Mohammed on the entry lists poised to throw down some stupidly awesome time for the 30-34 masters AG.

not sure you if were addressing me or the general public Miss FLAJill but I’ll be the first to admit that I only recognize Phelps, I’m not familiar with anyone else having never paid a days worth of attention to swimming outside of Phelps.

I looked that guy up on the website and yes, he sounds legit!

I was intrigued by this statement on his webpage (well, at least I think it’s him!) when I clicked on “lessons”:

Sabir Muhammad and his extraordinary team of instructors have formulated an outstanding technique for swimming instruction. Without the use of any aids, the instruction focuses on teaching the student to kick first. Once a student has a confident and propulsive kick we begin to instruct the competitive swimming strokes. Starting with the freestyle and backstroke then moving on to breaststroke and butterfly.

Is kicking really that important to new swimmers? Or do you think he teaches it first because it allows people to get in the water while feeling comfy with their head out and up in the air for awhile?

I’m a sinker so that being said and from first hand previous experience I know that the kick or rather the legs is important just to stay afloat and stay comfortable. As for new swimmers and whatnot, I don’t know but I won’t dispute what he says, that’s for certain.

I’ve been teaching swim lessons to kids for a while, and that’s the basic progression we usually go through when teaching kids to swim.
First you start with basics (floating, gliding, kicking), then you gradually add in new things (freestyle arms, breathing), then you move to new strokes (backstroke then breaststroke then butterfly).

I started my 4 year old with full freestyle at 3 1/2, he goes pretty well. His stroke won´t be winning any prizes just yet but the basics are all there.

I was excited about this thread but then read the link and found out that Phelps wasn’t actually competing in an ultra-swim.
