IM 70.3 Ohio move to Sandusky

https://www.ironman.com/im703-ohio

Not sure how I feel about the move from Delaware. That is in my backyard so very easy logistics. The new venue will be a drive now plus an overnight. The setting will be more interesting (maybe), kinda like the old REV3 race in the area.

Doesn’t look like it will be at Cedar Point. Think they are being a little optimistic about the average air temp at 72 for late July! Sandusky is a great venue, perfect place for a destination race.

I just saw the email as well. I did Rev3 Cedar Point as my first 70.3 and truly regret not riding roller coasters on the trip. I’m tempted to do it as a complete vs compete event and pair it with a park day.

I loved the convenience of having a race in the area but I didn’t love Delaware Lake nor the logistics of getting everyone up there. Luckily it’s still close enough for a weekend trip.

Agreed, the finish is Selby Stadium was pretty low key compared to other finish lines. In Sandusky is might have a bit more of the pomp of a IM event.

Since I only complete, I might do the same!

Will it be hotter or cooler? I was thinking hotter but not sure about the Lake Erie winds.

I do hope for a single transition area in Sandusky. The two transition areas of the Delaware location is just more complicated.

While it could be anything, especially thunderstorms, most likely will be in the 70s at the start and move into the mid 80s with some humidity. Probably not wetsuit legal.

Tommy like wingies

Kind of intrigued by this race and I live in L.A.

The chute just wasn’t as intimate as other venues, everyone was so far up in the stands that it just felt so open. Finding a half mile somewhere before the loop through the residential area and moving the finish to the street in front of the stadium would have been much more fun for finishers, I’d think.

I liked Ohio 70.3. Delaware was just pancake flat and there were a lot of decent restaurants and grocery stores in the area. Accommodations were abundant and not overpriced.

Sandusky seems like a bad choice. Delaware Lake was filthy and had e coli last time I was there, but the swim despite being nonwetsuit was predictable. A little too congested, but okay. Now Lake Erie? Wtf. The Great Lakes suck for races. I’ve done Steelhead the year it was nonwetsuit legal with 2.5’ waves. It was bull. I’ve done Racine and the swim was canceled with 47 degree water. The practice swim the day before at 57 degree water and sunny was a lot of fun (not really).

Aren’t there better venues in Ohio? Maybe around Dayton or Youngstown? Sandusky does not appeal to me whatsoever.

There were actually better swim venues just a few miles south of Delaware Lake at Alum Creek State Park. When the original Ohio 70.3 was announced I had assumed it was actually in Alum Creek - could have easily created a 56 mile course ending in the same place from there (or just keep it out at Alum Creek/Polaris area). I live 12 hours from Columbus but drove In from 2016-2019 because my parents still live in the area. No chance of driving up for Sandusky. It seems now there will be 3 races in the “general Michigan” area with the move and not much in that lower Ohio/Kentucky/Indiana area during the summer, unless the old endurathon gets moved back to its July (?) date.

They need to put an Ironman 70.3 in Louisville. It would be a blazing fast race in an exciting and supportive venue.

The swim looks be located in Sandusky Bay, a somewhat more protected area than open Lake Erie.
