Iliofemoral ligament strain- cause of knee pain? UPDATE

UPDATE: saw ortho today and had MRI done. Radiologist report will be emailed to me within 24 hours. Follow up with ortho is in one week. I do not eant to wait that long. Is it bad form to go to another doctor with all this info?

Have appt with massage therapist Thurs…may pick his brain for a referral.

Any input or advice?

All, here’s the timeline:
tues - ran, no issue
Wed- ran with no.issues, but low back hurt bad
Wed night- front of hip started to hurt too
Thurs - hip and back hurt. No run
Fri - hip back hurt. Knee started to hurt too. No run.
Sat- Low back pain very bad. Front of hip pain bad. Under knee cap pain bad. Up or down stairs, that leg feels weaker.

Urgent care doc seemed to think it was the iliofemoral ligament being strained. Sound right? Will be Googling, but am at pharmacy getting pain meds. Hurts like.hell…

No
With all due respect the urgent care doc you saw is an idiot
.

gaz, here’s what I was thinking.

I strain my hip (front of hip, unsure medical/technical name), it has screwed up my pelvic alignment…as a result, my back hurts, and my knee hurts as well, due to the hips being all off.

Is that feasible?

considering you don’t strain ligaments you SPRAIN them … he is wrong.

He may have said sprain, that may be my fault.

You may consider checking to see if it is from a shortened/inflammed TFL, could potentially produce the knee/hip pain.

I cannot do any TFL stretches. It’s agonizing pain. Thanks for reminding me of the muscle.

The pain is NOT on the side of the hip at all, but on the front. And knee pain is directly under the kneecap, no where else really. Both are dull pains. If I tried to do a quad stretch, it would be HIGHLY acute, a 10 out of 10 on the pain scale.

The other thing…it’s gotten much worse today and yesterday vs. Wednesday (the day after I think I hurt it). I am having a hard time walking around, standing, etc.

Rectus Femoris strain may be a possibility then if your pain is localized to the front of the hip, it also inserts into the base of the patella. As far as your back pain you may have strained the Iliopsoas(Hip Flexor), which would explain your back pain in my oppinion. If you strained the Iliopsoas first and then recruited Rectus Femoris, another albeit weaker hip flexor, to compensate during activity it may explain a strain in both. Either way I would recommend a visit to a well-regarded PT or insist on a hip MRI to really answer the issue.

another question/comment.

Today, I was attempting to test leg strength…did a very easy one-leg squat with my ‘healthy’ leg, felt fine. did another one with the bad/left leg, and felt very weak.

Can a strained/sprained/partially torn TFL and/or rectus femoris and/or iliofemoral ligament cause muscle weakness like that?

Not a fan of muscle weakness at all; that’s the one thing that has me remotely concerned, only because I don’t know if that’s normal for a strained leg muscle like that.

Bump. Sorry all.
