What would you do first?
I’m looking to buy a 9/10 speed 2005 Dual and I do want to put a little extra money to get more out of it.
What are the first things I should upgrade (besides wheels)? Cranks? Seatpost? Fork?

Not sure what the general consensus will be here but I’m in the process of upgrading my Dual right now.
I’m going to VisionTech R-bend clipons as soon as they’re available because the 230mm clipons that came on it were too short and I’m going to try out the new Profile Design Tristryke saddle.
I’m also going to put on the FSA compact megaexo crankset and the Dura-Ace tripple rear derailleur but not quite yet, there probably aren’t too many hills in Bahrain so I should be okay with the stock drivetrain.
After that I’d like to get some nice deep wheels from HED or Zipp but that’s going to be some time off I think.
Renn disc, aero front wheel, Vision Tech base bar.
The upgrades to my Dual are as follows. New brakes, Cervelo Carbon seatpost, Arione saddle, FSA GOSSAMER COMPACT MEGAEXO and Speedplay pedals.
Next upgrade will be Easton Aero forks, Easton Delta and Aero carbon force bars and an Syntace Stem and one day a RENN disk.
I already have a set of Hed wheels. This bike was an amazing fit when I bought it. The upgrades are two fold as I will be putting the other parts onto another bike which I was gong to do anyways. So why not upgrade the great bike and put the other stuff on a winter bike frame.
Once every thing is done, I should have some left over parts and will probably send them to TSR.
For me the worst thing on the dual is the brakes. They need to be upgraded ASAP!!
You probably ought to get a few tris under your belt before you worry about upgrades. The bike could do very well at Kona off the rack. Throw 404s on there and you’ll just look like a poser. Spend the $$ somewhere else like a vacation to Kona or a vacation race like St. Croix.
I’ve already done quite a few and am training for IMUSA 2006.
Since I own a 2004 Dual, here are my suggestions:
That’s it, but that is just my opinion.
what are brakes?
What are WRONG with the breaks is a better question.
Is this just a safety thing or what?
Throw 404s on there and you’ll just look like a poser.
What would make you say that?
they are a little soft, i don’t find them lacking, but not as nice as DA or Ultegra
.
Stock Cervelo brake pads are a bit soft. They tend to have a mushy feeling to them. If you spent $10 replacing the pads instead of $40-60 replacing the whole brakes, you’ll get the desired effect of better stopping power.
The stock brakes don’t have a return spring, so that can lead to issues for some of the less mechanically inclined. A non-issue with STI’s, but I suppose it makes a difference for brake levers without their own internal return mechanism.
so whats a good upgrade and for how much?
You guys spend a lot of dough on a $1500 bike. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
Probably stock Shimano pads for $10 a pair. Or you could just get some Zero Gravity brakes for about $400 (or $290). I’m personally partial to get some Zero G’s.
all the world’s a stage. we’re all posers.
