I want to try another brand and have hear some good things from brooks. I’m a long time adidas wearer, but wore asics in high school. I overpronate and like the adidas supernova classic, so would the brooks vapor be a good choice? Looking for someone out there that has made the switch or tried one. If anyone knows the comparable sizes, it would be much appreciated
I wear a 10 in both adidas and Brooks. In my experience, adidas and Brooks fit very similarly and I never have found a pair of Asics that worked. The arches are too high and in the wrong spot for my feet while the adidas and brooks are just right. I don’t have much of a pronation issue and love the Brooks Burn.
The Brooks Axiom and Trance are similar shoes to the Supernova Classic. I would say they have a bit more motion control built in than the SC, as the SC has a pretty small amount of motion control. I would not recommend switching straight into Brooks from Adidas, especially the Supernova Classic, without trying on the shoes first. Brooks has a much straighter last and wider fit to it throughout their line, whereas Adidas (especially the SC) is more shapely and narrow. Asics fit much more similar to Adidas than Brooks to Adidas. In my experience, Adidas may sometimes fit a half size larger than Brooks or Asics, but it is not always the case. If you feel you are close to too small in your Adidas though, you may want to upsize a half for the other brands.
Again, it would be best to try these shoes on first. The Asics 1110 (or whatever that series is up to) is a great shoe, my personal favorite, and similar to the Supernova Classic in motion control. It still fits a little bit wider, but not so wide as the Brooks.
Why do you want to switch from a shoe that works?
I wear an 11.5 in both Adidas and Asics. I was a long-time (age 11 to 21) wearer of Adidas, but I’m sold on my Asics now.
Well, you could say that the shoes don’t “work”. I have a nagging knee problem that I am fixing with orthotics, but I was looking at a different brand for options. Plus the adidas shoes tend to wear quickly on the outer rear corner of the shoe where I land, more so that previous shoes. I tend to slip into a comfort zone w/a brand, and if a different brand fits my foot just that little bit better, I figure now is a good time to check that out and compare things with the orthotics folks. I have a somewhat unusual stride as well, so small differences in last or fit can really make or break the shoe for me. Really i’ve just never tried anything but adidas or asics.
I will def. try on the shoes first, I was just trying to get a feel from some personal experiences.
By the way, I really appreciate everyone’s replies–its very helpful to hear individual takes on a shoe, even if they conflict somewhat.
Hmm… Adidas tend to fit a little more narrow than Brooks or Asics. If you have a narrow foot, You might be OK with a 1/2 size smaller in the Brooks and Asics. However, small shoes can cause black toe nails, especially in hot weather and long distance runs where your feet can swell.
Many running stores will allow you to buy some shoes and try them for a few days to a few weeks (indoors only), and if you don’t like them, or they don’t fit, you can return them.
I am a big Asics fan myself, but they are over-priced. I like the Kayanos (very well-cushioned, moderate support) and the DS Trainers (light/moderate support, flexible, fast and light - almost a racing flat) - these DEFINITELY fit a 1/2 size smaller (even than their previous years’ models). I’ve heard many good reviews on the 2110’s as well.
Mizuno’s fit similar to Adidas - Try the Inspires or Elixirs.
I would pretty much agree. The Axiom is probably the closest in stability to the SNC, but is not really in the same category. It is much more lightweight and, although it is my most favorite shoe, not really a shoe I would recommend for an everyday trainer.
The Trance, and Adrenaline, are probably going to be too stable when compared to the Classic. Although, if he really does over-pronate, he may need more stability anyways.
Brooks have a very distinctive fit/feel that is not going to be similar to Adidas. The Axiom and Trance are a bit wider in the forefoot, while the Adrenaline is pretty close fitting all around. Going up a 1/2 size is most likely going to be necessary.
