Hey shoe gurus. Kindly act like Amazon and NetFlix Any short-cuts to picking another brand?
After 4 years in Wave Riders (2-3 pr per year), an A.R.T. chiro suggests I alternate with similar types of shoes. Some one here said “favorite shoes = favorite injuries” too.
(I have a high-ish arch, neutral foot, maybe tend to heel strike but working on that some; no real heavy-duty running issues and am 128# 5’ 6"… if that info is needed).
How can you heal strike if you have a high arch? All your weight goes off the front of your foot. I’d have to work hard to heel strike. What cadence do you run at?
I’m also on Wave Riders and have a high arch so I’ll be interested to read responses. I know there are a bunch who have abandoned the model over the last few years.
I switched from the riders to the asics DS trainer. Yes, “stability”…but it’s pretty mild. If you want none at all, the speedstar is almost the same, but a neutral shoe.
Matt Fitzgerald’s book Brain Training for Runners made this interesting summary comment (not quoting verbatim): That your foot tells you what shoe works by its proprioception feedback to your brain. SO it seems from that perspective, one would not switch shoes if they continue to work for you. But the repetitive action of running in same shoes would also seem to groove into muscle memory a certain “feel” to running. Chicken and egg kind of scenario.
I have a pair of Mizuno Wave Rider 11’s (unworn) I am mulling over returning for the 12’s (fit me differently) but… then the DC mentioned switching brands.
Well just idle chatting since I am tapering (read, “going nuts waiting”) for Houston marathon… gonna visit my running store when I get back and see “what my feet tell me” (wait a few days after the marathon of course)
(Hard to read thru the shoe marketing BS, …oops I mean, information… in the running mags too-- but that is a topic for another thread)
I’ve been alternating btwn the Wave Rider and the Asics Nimbus. I also run trails in Brooks Cascadias, before that I had the Mizuno Wave Ascend.
Tempted by the Cumulus for my next non-Miz pair.
I really like my Riders, but they’re not good on all surfaces. Thigns get stuck in the horseshoe shaped heel, the exposed parts of the midsole get get knicked up.
Ditto on Saucony Pro Grid Ride. After 5+ years on the Wave Riders, this change has been smooth. Fit and feel are similar but Pro Grid Ride is a bit narrower and more flexible.
Triple on the Pro Grid Ride. Ran in the Wave Riders up to the 10s. The revision destroyed my shins and calves. Switched over to the Saucony Rides and love them. Also picked up a pair of Triumph 5s recently (got a deal - a pair of Triumphs and a pair of Rides for $100). Seem a bit more durable so far, but I’ll still do long races in the Rides.
+1. I also switch between the Riders and Precisions. I really like the Precisions for fast workouts and racing. I’ve ran a marathon in 'em with no issues.
For those of you who’ve worn both the riders and the precisions, how many miles do you get out of the precisions?
i really liked my rider 10s but they don’t last quite as long as i’d like.
Hi all- I went to competely different running store to try new brands, and to get a new set of experienced eyeballs on my feet. Now granted 4 days before a marathon (minor aches and pains building up) is not the best time to be making a completely informed decision on shoes (I will race in my Mizunos still), but I wanted to get the shoes I had bought returned before 2 weeks, then start recovery runs in different brand.
I ended up in Adidas Supernova Glides after trying on maybe 8 pairs of brands similar to Mizunos. None sung out to me as different, yet comfortable. To most shoes on the list, my feet said-- “eh… feels like same ol same ol”, but the Glides felt different yet comfortable to my tired dogs. Made some notes tho on possible future brands to work into my shoe rotation for '09 after I’m recovered from Houston.
Brooks Ghost-- what’s w/ the built up forefoot? All the others felt too similar to Mizunos WR’s.
Part of this whole life-long learning thing with Tri and running–> shoe nuances. Factor into shoe budget some trial and error!
Thanks again for your thoughtful replies.

As the owner of a run specialty store, I’m around these brands and customers every day and I have to say to those who responded to this question…you guys know your stuff! Those were some solid, reliable answers and I can’t say any of you were far off of your thoughts and advice. Nice work!

I’m on my 4th pair of precisions and while I don’t track my mileage by shoe, I’d estimate that I get somewhere around 400 miles out of the Precisions before I feel like I need a new pair. I’m still in my first pair of Riders and it does seem that they don’t last quite as long as the Precisions (although this doesn’t seem intuitive to me given the Precisions are the lighter shoe).
