Idiot latex tube installation

Anybody have a step by step install for latex tubes with sealant? Going to give them a try this year. I have the removable valve core Vitoria latex tubes and will be using orange seal sealant. Mounting gp4000s. Searched didn’t find anything. Do I really need to use talc to instal and when would I add the sealant after complete install and inflation and how much? It’s like rocket science I know.

Latex tubes are alot more floppy when uninflated which makes them harder to get on the rim and under the tire. Put some pressure in them so they hold their shape when installing. Talc does help to stop them sticking to the rim/tire. Because they are so soft they tend to be more likely to get pinched when installing.

Install the tube/tire first, adding the sealant after.

Honestly, I don’t do anything different than what I did for butyl tubes and I’ve yet to have a pinch flat. I just take my time, and double check both beads all the way around before stating to inflate, inflate one or two pumps, check again and fix if needed, and then inflate. Have never used sealant, never pre-inflated, never had a problem. My opinion, patience is the key. It’s just a tire installation, nothing to overthink.

Thank you. I was thinking I could just do it without sealant and talc and just be patient. But reading different things makes it sound lot more complicated than it is probably.

here you go, step by step.

Awesome an official idiots guide. Just what I needed.

I started using latex tubes last spring.
I installed them exactly the same way I always installed my butyl tubes except that I dusted the rim channel and inside of tyre with talc first. I had no problems at all. I didn’t use sealant but as I understand it that’s just a case of squirting a little into the tube after installation. All seems pretty straight forward to me.
If you normally struggle changing tubes, then expect to struggle with latex too. Otherwise, it’s unlikely you’ll have any problems. Just be a little more careful than before about pinching the tube during installation or between the rim and tyre.

Don’t get the big deal about latex installation… Just double check that there no pink / green in between the tire and the rim. Check twice/thrice and check one more time after you inflate to 20-30 psi. Never had a flat…

Check orange seal’s instructions on their web site, they also have a youtube video I believe.

I use baby powder. Have plenty of that around my house!

get a right size proper rim tape…

hey cheers, certainly my way isn’t the only way.

Do you have a source on rim strips that come by mm increments?

My helpful tip: Do not use tire levers when installing the new latex tube. Use your palms and thumbs.

depending on your wheel setup you may find it easier to squirt in sealant before you install the tube. I use Orange Seal as well and it is very easy, but with my deep front I install an extender so would not be able to remove the valve core insert the sealant, reinsert the valve core then install the extender with the tube in the wheel. Likewise, for the rear disc there is not a lot of room to be removing valve core, filling up tube etc without a lot of manipulation of the valve which can tear the tube if you’re not careful. My recommendation is to insert the Orange Seal while the tube is out then install as others have said - pump up and you’re good to go. Another recommendation if you are going to leave the tubes in race wheels is to pump up the tires once a week and give them a spin to redistribute the sealant.

I just wing it

Actually it’s “baby powder” I used too. Is that not the same thing as talc? If not, accept my apologies for my earlier inaccurate reporting!

Thanks for the help guys. Did it without talc or anything else seems to be working fine will try and get a ride in to be sure. Freaked out for no reason.

Read the label carefully, sometimes it’s made from cornstarch.

I found that pure, uncut Colombian cocaine makes a fine substitute if you want to class up your installation and/or are out of baby powder.

Just looked it up. In this case it is in fact the same thing.
Ingredients: Talc, parfum

Thanks for the heads up!

Plus you change your next flat in half the time.
