Ideas for Fishing/Canoe Trip

I was taking my nephew for a fishing trip next month, and our original plans fell through. I have 10 days in the second week of august off, and am looking for ideas. I can go anywhere from NC/VA to Ontario/Quebec (I am in PA). We were originally going to Verendrye (QE), could go still, but the rest of the party had to withdraw. Anyone have any thoughts? Salt water is cool too, never been to the maritime provinces or Maine coast. Is it too late to change plans? We weren’t originally planning on luxury, mostly going from campsite to campsite by canoe for a week. This would be the third time doing this, but we never had less than 3 boats and 6 people before. Since our party is cut from 6 to 2, we were thinking of being a little less adventurous, perhaps not completing as big a loop as originally planned, or going someplace else entirely.

Thanks in advance if any of you have thoughts/ideas.

Algonquin Park in Ontario. I went there every summer as a kid for a week with my relatives. It was one of the highlights of my youth. Never really that busy, nice canoeing/portages we short and easy (except puke hill;))
We used to go in at Crotch Lake then to Shirley and on to Annette or something like that. I just remember the Crotch he, he.

Okay, so it’s in MN…(although Quetico, which is connected to it is in Ontario)…but the Boundary Waters Canoe Area wilderness is pefect for that. And a week is more than enough time to do a really nice trip. WIth two people you can do a loop easily–my husband and I get up there just the two of us at least oce or twice a season. If you like camping, canoeing, and fishng…you’re in luck…cuz that’s pretty much what you do there.

Gorgeous views, towering pines, crystal clear waters…watching the northern lighhts shimmer as you eat fresh caught walleye and listen to th eloons and the wolves. OMG, it is the single most wonderful place on earth. Peaceful, tranquil…stunning.

I’ve also had a lot of great trips kayaking along the Maine coast from Portland up to Mount Desert Island. There are a bunch of islands you can camp on along the coast, even more if you join the Maine Island Trail Assoc.

check out Quetico Provincial Park. One of the coolest canoeing and camping trips I have done was there. http://www.queticopark.com/

I second the Boundary Waters - I was up there for a week last year. It was the best fishing trip I had ever taken.

Thanks for the ideas, I am definitely looking into them, even the trip to MN. My cousin recommended a trip up the James Bay Rd., so if I am considering that, how can I say MN is too far a drive?

Thanks to all of you!

I’ll second Algonquin. I went there for summer camp for most of the eighties. Actually, the camp was the camp from the mpovie Indian Summer. As far as canoe tripping, there is some AWESOME paddling to be done there. Opeongo lake and the Petawawa are two of the most spectacular parts of the park. My personal favorite lake is South Tea Lake (where my old camp Tamakwa sits). You can see Burnt Isle and lear the story of Jacques the Axeman. You can visit where the famous painter Tom Thomson lived. It’s really amazing area.

Worth every moment of the journey.

If you want to do the Quetico/BWCA trip, we have a GREAT loop we did that covers both…we were there last fall and the fishing was AMAZING. I mean way more fish than we could ever hope to catch, let alone eat.
