Looking for local knowledge here. One or more of the athletes who will race in the first U.S. Olympic Trials race (April 18, on Oahu) would like to train somewhere in the islands in the two weeks prior. Doesn’t have to be Oahu. Here are the priorities:
Access to pool.
Outside the most densely populated areas.
Lightly trafficked roads to ride.
Dry side of the island.
One spot under consideration is Waimea (Kamuela), in the middle of the Parker ranch on the Big Island. An athlete can swim at Hawaii Preparatory Academy and bike the road over the Kohala Mountains to Hawi and the section of the Queen K from Kawaihae to Hawi. There is also a cinder track at HPA, and lots of dirt trails for running.
Does Maui have a spot that would meet these specs? Is there somewhere on Oahu that would work? What am I missing? Thanks.
Oahu is really not a bad place to train but I think the Big Island would be the best bet. Although Waimea gets pretty cold - is 55 degrees cold? Not too familiar with Maui though I’m pretty sure you could find somewhere there that would meet your standards.
If it is only for a couple weeks, I think Oahu would be the place to be we have Manoa Pool 50m that is free, Uof H Masters, Palolo, Makiki,or the YMCA pools to train in. With or without coaching/ workouts. The course is pretty flat so Big Island or Maui cycling wouldn’t be much good for sharpening as they are usually hillfests. There are plenty of people to ride with and he could really get a good feel for the course here. Running, we have tons of people to run with or solo if he wants. Again running on the course wouldn’t hurt. If you need more help e-mail me direct. GHinHawaii@aol.com
