Ideal "Race Weight" for 6ft tall IMer

For you FOPers and Kona Qualifiers that are approx. 6’0" tall (that’ my ht):

What is your “Race Weight” and Percent Body Fat (if you know it) for your A races.

I am 6ft tall and weigh 180lbs.
Doing my 6th IM at IMKY this yr. I wonder if Im hampering myself some by my body composition.
I realize this is subjective and varies, but, just wonder what competitvie people my height usually weigh.

Thanks in advance.

It’s REALLY subjective, I’d say.

I’m 6’ too, and race IM at about 165. Right now, I’m at 175. I’m certainly not front of the pack though. Best IM is a 10:30.

There are some big dudes that are incredibly fast.

Your bodyfat?

I think it also depends on your frame size.

Agreed. I’m a middle/front-ish half IM (+/- 4 hours) and Olympic distance guy. I am 6’2" and 175 lbs. I am not sure what my body composition is but I would wager that my muscle mass is a little higher than the faster/leaner guys of my height. I am trying very hard to get to my race weight down to 165 lbs before my A-Race HIM in August. Imagine strapping a 10 lbs water bottle to your bike and doing hill repeats. Now remove that same water bottle and do those same hill repeats again. I know this is totally unscientific but do you see where I’m going with this?

With the obvious disclaimers - I am 6’1" and race at 158. I have done 6 IMs and best was 9:38. The other side of this is that I stay at 158-162 year round. Draw your own conclusions, but I thought I would chime in. Oh yeah - I am racing iIMKY too. Should be fun.

I’m 6’2" and a tad over 160lbs. This is slightly chunky for me.

Will have %Body Fat determined over the noon hr…I think I am leaving some speed on the course by my body composition issues. May need some fine tuning.

114 lbs.

Last season I was 5’11" 195lbs and doing a 5-hour HIM and a 3:30 marathon - now I am 187lbs and shooting for 185lbs. I am also generally built more like a linebacker than a triathlete, so it really depends a lot on your build etc. I think the least I would ever want to weigh is 180 - beyond that I would feel like I was whithering away.

For other guys who are 5’11" 180 would be unacceptably overweight, for me it would be approaching beanpole-dom, so it depends a lot on the individual. Weight loss helps most of all on the run, but I find it helps very little if not at all on bike and swim. Obviously the hillier the bike, the more weight loss will help you.

I’m 6’1", and now tipping the scales around 154. IMAZ race weight was 146.

I just got measured at 14.1% (used skin caliper method—not terribly accurate with a magin of erro of +/-3%) but just gives me a rough guestimate
.

I am a little taller than 6’1 and started triathlon 5 years ago at 200 pounds. Did an oly in 2:17 at that weight and then have done some 1/2 IMs over the years. I started to drop some weight and once I got down to 180 pretty much stick around the 2:00 mark for oly’s and 4:20-4:30s for 1/2’s. Also did a half marathon at 2:00 at 1:28 and then at 185 did a 1:18. But I also had never trained really before those races so I would say that the weight and training helped, but the training more than the weight. I was also had less body fat at 200 pounds than I do now at 180.

You guys are all going to give me serious body image issues. I would give you my race results at varying weights but I think I need to go throw up the celery sticks I ate this morning for breakfast.

Wow. I’m 6’2’ sub-10Im’er and weighed in at 160. Some of you guys must be scrawny. I can hardly imagine being much less than 160. Over the winter I generally bump up to to around 170. When the long bike rides come in, the weight drops like a rock.

My ideal race weight is around 175 (I can’t imagine being too much lower than that) but I qualified for kona at ImCletus at 190 since I couldn’t run and just did bike/donuts bricks to prepare.

*edit-I’m 6’1.

If you can get dunked it helps a lot. When I was running marathons and suchlike, my lean body mass was around 155, so that plus say 10% fat would be around 170, I tended to race a little below that, sometimes as light as 163. I got sick a lot too, not sure if there was a relationship.

I am doing my first IM this year. My weight throughout the year rarely goes above 173-174. My race weight last year for a HIM was around 167. I am about 6 1.5. I actually want to hold me weight around 170 this year.

It’s very subjective.

I’m 6’2" and usually stay in the 183 - 188 range coming into an Ironman.

Qualified at IM LP 3 times at that weight…usually finished the race in the
178-183 range.

My formula was 1 hour swim - 5:20 - 5:30 bike - 3:45 - 4:00 run to qualify
in the 40-44 / 45-49 age groups…freezing on the bike at IM LP last year
shot that all to hell…best time was 10:15…so it can be done for the
“big boned” guys.

Heading to IM KY as well this year! Hoping for no more IM’s in monsoons.

When I put on my “Prince” elevator platform boots I’m 6’ and 138 lbs.

Without, I’m 5’6" and 133. ; )

No, seriously, I think ideal weight varies vastly depending on your frame and how you are built. psycholist and I are the exact same height, but he’s in his best shape, and very lean, at around 148 to 150. But he’s naturally more solidly built, wider shoulders, hips, etc. I’m somewhat slightly built, so when I get real lean (say 6 to 8%), I’m around 126-128.

I say go more by bodyfat than weight. You shouldn’t be able to pinch much more than a pencil width anywhere on your body if you want to
get uber-competitive lean. (I’ve got a ways to go)
