Ice pouch for your neck

Does anyone know of a pouch that you can put ice in and tie or Velcro around your neck for running in hot weather? Basically a ziploc bag that can be tied? I know I can go the bandanna route and have seen the freezable ones on Amazon

Get some stockings and fill them with ice cubes. Make them long enough so you can lay it around your neck with cubes on both sides and tie a knot in the front.

I have used ziplock bags for hot weather races.

At IM PR 70.3 earlier this year, I grabbed a ‘sandwich’ sized ziplock with a slider @ T2 and put in the pocket of my trisuit and when I came up to the run stations that had ice, I’d put ice in it. I could run a bit holding it on my neck but not for long as I’d start to get cramps. The best position for me was tucking it in front of my kit on my chest. After a (very) short while, I drank the cold water. Well, some of it and some went all over my face. That worked: until the ice ran out-

I’ve also used the instant cold packs that you squeeze to activate. They do not last long-only for about 1/2-3/4 mile in the heat then you have to hold it until a garbage pail is found-usually @ the next aid station…

I made ‘ice bandanas’ for WSER, basically just a cotton bandana with a pouch sewed in the middle. Check out the link below:

These race saver bags work pretty well

I’m sure that you could jerry-rig something similar.

Pantyhose. AKA ice socks. It’s what we’ve used with my wife at RAAM TT Worlds; Fill with a handful of ice, tie off, shove into jersey at neck, let it melt down your shoulders/back, etc. Take one on your long ride and stop at AM/PM, grab ice at the fountain, and be refreshed for quite while on a 100-degree day as it melts.

The wild thing is, there are NO places that sell pantyhose anymore. I went to Target, Kohls, and… nada. Guess you have to order pantyhose online!

There are some trisuits that have internal ice pockets built in for this purpose as well. the Kiwami Spyder suits have one built in at the back of the neck…

But yes, the ice stockings or ziploc bags tend to be standard to transport the ice, and then it’s just sliding it into the ice pocket, or under a for fitting garment. While pace bunnying for an insanely hot half-marathon (first hot weekend of the year), I soaked a bandana, and froze it the night before, and then tied it loosely around my neck so it would cool me down as it gradually melted in the race.

You should also check out the De Soto Sport Skincooler Long Sleeve Top. I do not like the feeling of ice around my neck while I am running. It has pockets for ice down the back. I have used it in numerous hot weather long distance triathlons and trail run races and found it to be great for coverage, comfort and coolness.
