Ian Thorpe - out with the old, in with the new

Greetings my american brothers,

There is HOT word on the street over here, that a-la Craig Mottram, Ian Thorpe is considering a move into Triathlon. Probably initially as an age grouper, but reports in on his cycling potential and also his running from general fitness work for swimming, he could pose a real threat as a Pro in a few years !

So…given he has a hhhuuuggee engine room to push a masssiiivveeee gear, what kind of IM time do you reckon he’d roll out…?

Whatever; he’s moving to San Fransisco to join the Ice Capades!

I see him more as an ITU guy. Seems like his height would become more of a disadvantage at IM distances.

Not to mention his enormous ‘rudder’.

I think he could definately go sub 9 hours. If lance can run a sub 3 marathon, obviously Thorpe can drop a 4.30 bike split.

Nice scoop Aussie yo, but I can let you know that Shane Smith (IMG Media guy from AUS) is already working on getting him a celebrity spot to Ironman Japan.

If he is to take up the deal and that would be no surprise as he is more famous in Japan than anywhere else.

Other celebs already confirmed for Kona 2007

Jack Osbourne (Think MTV have made a nice donation for him to the Ironman Corporation)
Grace McClure (Aussie ex super model) Already confirmed.

and soon to be **Ian Thorpe. ** Once he does Japan, he will back up for Kona. WTC are gagging for a high profile athlete like him as they hae the states market sewn up but not the asian market yet.

Obviously his currently listed sponsors would be over the moon for him to do Ironman. In particular Ironman Japan as half are from there.

Thorpe’s sponsors are:
Uncle Toby’s
Omega
Audi
TV Asahi
Sunland Group
Qantas
adidas
Channel 7
Sony
Konami Sports
Autore South Sea Pearls

Nice scoop Aussie yo,
they don’t call me ‘Baskin Robbins’ for nuthin’ mate…

if thorpey swam 38 minutes would he get enough of a lead out of the water to hold of stadler to beyond hawii
.

All right. We have the bones now. 38 swim, 4.30 bike and as he is like lance, a similar marathon time of say 3.00 even. 8.08. He would have won Kona this year. those other guys must be duds as Thorpe hasn’t even started training yet.

Jack Osbourne!?!?! Personally I’ve had enough of all the Osbournes for a while. They must be making another TV series out of his training. I don’t think that he could finish an Ironman.

I would like to see Ian Thorpe on the start line though. He would make the swim interesting at the very least.

Ironman is for the triathletes that aren’t fast enough to make it at olympic distance. Motteram has the speed to succeed if his swim is up to it, if he can;t make the first pack it will be to no use though. I thought when he did Noosa a couple of years back he did not have the fastest run ? His swim and bike were very good though.

He had to race in the open division. He said after that he had a slower run as he did not start with the Pros and had noone to pace him or push him.

Oh please God no!!! This f-in post is going to rank up there with the 10 months of arguments over “How Fast Will Lance Go?” and “Will a Silverman Team Break 8 Hours?” People, please, your arguments are not the same thing as an actual real athletic performance! Get a life.

Thorpie at IM Japan? That will mean this nice race with a small and not so strong field will go boom! Better amp up my training now.

Grace McClure (Aussie ex super model) Already confirmed.

Nothing special in the flesh. Another example of the circus.

He could swim butterfly and kick anybody who want to come close to him or attempt to draft him! That would be a sight at a start of swim.

Jack Osbourne dnf’ed at Marathon des Sables this year. (One of many apparently. More dnfs than the race usually gets) Kid’s clearly got an addictive personality, and better for him to channel it into a fitness addiction than go back on the drugs. I’m just not crazy about him getting a Kona slot.

uh, have you guys ever actually seen ian thorpe? not exactly built for running.

From:
http://www.topendsports.com/sport/swimming/profiles/thorpe-ian.htm

Ian Thorpe:

Height: 195 cm (6’5")
Weight:104 kg (229 lbs)
Feet Size: 17
Armspan: 195 cm

No way does anyone have to worry about this guy on the run. Sure he can slim down, but with feet the size of skateboards I doubt he’s got the kind of frame that will let him get to where he can run three hours in an IM.

Is this not the forum that dictates that the race CANNOT be won in the water? BFD if the Thorpedo can turn a 38 (in the open water), that still only gives him 12-20 min on the rest of the pro field, and i don’t think that he is going to hold a 26 mph avg on the bike and have a sub 3hr marathon in him.

Anyhow, it is alot of speculation considering tat we don’t know if he can even turn a sub 30 5K

Jack Osbourne!?!?! Personally I’ve had enough of all the Osbournes for a while. They must be making another TV series out of his training. I don’t think that he could finish an Ironman.
That’s how pretty much every teenage flick starts. “I don’t think you can…”
